Saudi Cement Shortage: Ten Million Tons on Order

Saudi Port Authority (SPA) says cement shipments have been coming since implementation of the decrees of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to import 10 million tons of cement to cover local demand. Citing the press spokesman for the SPA, Arab News reports that seven  seven ships with 202,000 tons of cement reached Dammam Port last week; one ship was loaded with 50,000 tons and another with 45,000 tons. Additionally, 72,000 tons will come through Jazan Port. The spokesman added that the incoming shipments from the UAE will help face up to the continuing cement crisis.

MS&D 2011: Hamburg Conference on Maritime Security

Stéphane Beemelmans, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Defence, is to open the second MS&D, international conference and exhibition on maritime security and defence hamburg, in Hall A4 of the Hamburg Fair at 9:00 am on Wednesday 15 June. Other speakers at the Opening of this three-day international conference are Senator Michael Neumann, Hamburg Minister of the Interior and Sport; Bernd Aufderheide, President and CEO Hamburg Messe und Congress, who will give a welcoming address; and Vice Admiral Axel Schimpf, Chief of Staff of the German Navy, who will give a keynote speech. The conference starts with introductory remarks by Vice Admiral (rtd) Lutz Feldt, Chairman of the Conference, which is split into two sections – a Security Panel and a Defence Panel.

RSGT Starts Commercial Operations

The completion of the first phase of Jeddah Islamic Port's newest world-class container facility, Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT), was celebrated on 22 December 2009 with the arrival of UASC's Vessel Al Muttanabi. Located at the northern end of the Jeddah Islamic Port (JIP), work at the two billion Saudi Riyal (approx USD 510MM) Greenfield container-terminal, commenced in January 2008. The 1.8 million TEU, second-generation terminal constructed under a BOT agreement with the Saudi Port Authority, is due to be fully completed by Q3 2010.
