DB Schenker Decarbonising Logistics Chain with Biofuels
Hapag-Lloyd has entered into a partnership with logistics provider DB Schenker to decarbonise supply chains through the use of biofuels.The two companies have signed an agreement for emission-reduced container transports with a waste- and residue-based biofuel. By end of 2023, DB Schenker plans to claim approximately 3,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions avoidance. This is based on at least 1,000 tonnes of pure biofuel.Hapag-Lloyd launched the Ship Green product to offer its customers emission-reduced ocean transports.
Volvo Cars Switches to Biofuels for Ocean Freight
Volvo Cars has announced that it is switching delivery of its production material to container ships using renewable biofuel.The company will use renewable fuel for inbound ocean container transport of production material destined for manufacturing plants based in Europe and the Americas, as well as all spare parts distribution made globally by ocean container transport.Volvo Cars says that it is the first global car maker to announce such a switch which will achieve an immediate reduction in fossil CO2 emissions from intercontinental ocean freight by 55,000 tonnes a year.
DB Schenker to Launch Un-Crewed Coastal Container Feeder in Norway
Supply chain management and logistics solutions firm DB Schenker plans to build a fully-electric, zero-emission, un-crewed coastal container feeder to serve the route between Ikornnes quay and the Port of Ålesund in Norway. Antwerp Focuses on India, China and Eastern Europe
Malini Dutt, Robert Feng and Martin Hubenack have recently been appointed to represent the port of Antwerp in India, China and Eastern Europe respectively. This brings the number of port representatives to 12, reinforcing Antwerp's presence in its core hinterland and important overseas growth regions. The task of these representatives is to keep Antwerp "top of mind" with local companies, ports, chambers of commerce and other players. With an annual freight volume of 6.4 million tonnes carried between it and the Indian ports, Antwerp is the European market leader for this region. India is one of the fastest-expanding economies in the world, with an annual growth rate of 7%. Malini Dutt joins Raj Khalid, so that Antwerp now has two representatives in the port city of Mumbai.

Danish-Swedish Port Boosts Rail Freight
Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) has engaged in a new collaboration to increase freight traffic by train to and from Northern Harbour. The new train service starts from the Netherlands and serves Malmö three times a week. Freight traffic by rail will now increase in Malmö and Northern Harbour. The German forwarding agent Kombiverkehr has established a new train service which will serve Malmö three times a week. The first train, with a capacity up to 36 carriages, arrived on January 29.
DB Schenker, Maersk Line to Cut CO2 Emissions
DB Schenker Logistics and Maersk Line have signed a six-year strategic agreement on reducing CO2 emissions from ocean freight. The partnership emphasizes the companies' shared commitment to sustainable growth, says a press release by DB Schenker. Maersk Line will undertake to reduce the CO2 emissions of every container it ships on behalf of DB Schenker Logistics between now and 2020 by 20% compared to 2014 levels. Second Berth Opens at DP World London Gateway
New shipping services are being announced as the second berth at DP World London Gateway opens for business. Britainâs newest port doubled its capacity as the second berth began operations in May. Five new shipping routes to North America, South America East Coast and West Coast, the Middle East and Europe are starting. New rail, road and container services are also announced. The G6, one of the worldâs largest shipping alliances, will start a new service at DP World London Gateway on Friday, May 16.
DHL Expects Immunity in Price Fixing Investigation
Deutsche Post expects its DHL forwarding business to be granted immunity from prosecution and fines by Singapore antitrust authorities, who are investigating 11 companies for alleged price fixing, the German logistics company said. The Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) said this month it was investigating 11 freight forwarding companies, including Deutsche Post unit DHL Global Forwarding, for alleged price-fixing of air freight forwarding services. Deutsche Post told Reuters last week that the probe related to pricing and surcharges in the forwarding industry from 2002 to 2007. Forwarders buy cargo space from airlines, shippers and truckers and bundle shipments for customers, such as carmakers, high-tech firms and agriculture firms.
New CEO Showcases Marseilles Fos Initiatives
Christine Cabau Woehrel has taken up her new role as CEO of the Marseilles Fos port authority after two years heading the Port of Dunkirk. She succeeds Jean-Claude Terrier following a French transport ministry nomination that was backed by the portâs supervisory board in February and has now been confirmed by government decree. Her move marks a return to the headquarters city of CMA GGM, Franceâs biggest and the worldâs third largest container carrier, where she worked from 1987-2011.
Ocean Carriers and NVOCCs Select Descartes
Descartes Systems Group announced that ocean carriers and nonvessel operating common carriers (NVOCCs) have selected Descartes' Japan Ocean Advanced Filing Rule (AFR) solution to help them comply with Japan's new advanced cargo security initiative, which takes effect March 10, 2014. Japan's AFR mandate requires ocean carriers and NVOCCs to electronically submit data to Japan Customs on maritime container cargo intended for a port in Japan no later than 24 hours before departure of the vessel from the port of loading.
