Wärtsilä Combines Ship Design Units

– In a move to solidify its course as a complete ship system supplier, Wärtsilä at Norshipping in announced that it will combine all its ship design units into a single entity, to be known as Wärtsilä Ship Design. The units involved in this reorganization include the recently acquired naval architect companies Vik-Sandvik of Norway, Conan Wu & Associates (CWA) of Singapore, and SCHIFFKO of Germany, as well as the company's conceptual ship design unit in Finland. "There will be close collaboration between our Ship Design unit, other parts of the Ship Power organization, and other Wärtsilä businesses. Our long term ambition is to create standard proven designs with predefined solutions, and to provide operational services with performance guarantees and fixed prices.

Schiffko to Design Research Icebreaker

Wärtsilä's ship design and marine consultancy subsidiary, Schiffko, based in Hamburg, has been awarded a contract from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research of Bremerhaven, Germany, to design the revolutionary new European research icebreaker Aurora Borealis, which will have a deep-sea drilling capability. The contract, which was won in a public tender comprises the initial design concept, general arrangement planning, and full tender documentation. The ship shall facilitate research in ice and open water conditions in the fields of geology, geophysics, oceanography, biology, glaciology, bathymetry, meteorology, and atmosphere physics. The vessel will have the capability to navigate in up to 14.5 ft.

Wärtsilä Logs More Orders For Innovative Sulzer Engine

Wärtsilä Corporation has received the second order for Sulzer RT-flex diesel engines, which are powerplants that apply common-rail fuel injection with full electronic control to Sulzer RTA-series low-speed marine diesel engines. The units are reported to deliver benefits such as lower exhaust emissions, or lower fuel consumption at part load. Two seven-cylinder Sulzer RT-flex60C engines have been ordered to propel two 13,200 dwt containerized reefer ships contracted at Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo in Portugal. Each 7RT-flex60C engine will have a maximum continuous output of 16,520 kW (22,470 bhp) at 114 rpm. The engines will be built at Wärtsilä's Trieste, Itlay facility. The ships have been contracted by the Agricultural Export Co.

Wärtsilä Acquisition of Schiffko Completed

Wärtsilä Corporation announced an agreement to acquire the German ship design company group Schiffko on December 7. The transaction has now been completed. Schiffko specializes in the planning and design of ships especially in the container, research and offshore vessel segments. It also provides consultancy including project management and all kinds of supervisory work for shipowners and shipyards. Schiffko is located in Hamburg, Germany, but operates globally. Today the annual net sales totals approximately EUR 4 million and the company has some 25 employees.

Wärtsilä Corporation has signed an agreement to acquire the German ship design company group Schiffko. Sshiffko is privately-owned and has annual net sales totalling approximately $5.3m and some 25 employees. Schiffko specializes in the planning and design of ships especially in the container, research and offshore vessel segments. It also provides consultancy including project management and also all kinds of supervisory work for shipowners and shipyards utilizing Schiffko extended global maritime network of partners and experts. The company has a strong reputation and market position in these segments. Schiffko is located in Hamburg, Germany, but operates globally. Schiffkohas 50 years experience in planning and design in the marine field.
