Schottel Invests in New Crane System for Wismar Manufacturing Facility

A new US-flagged inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) vessel leverages three different propulsion systems for improved maneuverability and a high free running speed.The IMR vessel Paul Candies, built in 2018 by Louisiana builder Candies Shipbuilders and owned by its parent company Otto Candies, is equipped with two Combi Drives, two transverse thrusters and one retractable rudderpropeller from manufacturer SCHOTTEL.Due to two type SCD 560 STP SCHOTTEL Combi Drive azimuth thrusters the diesel-electric vessel reaches a top speed of 14 knots.

Schottel Merges Tidal Units to Sustainable Marine Energy

SCHOTTEL: Control Upgrade Extends Lifecycle on Harbor Tug

Schottel GmbH has  carried out a control upgrade on a seagoing and harbor tug equipped with azimuth thrusters from another manufacturer. Instead of replacing the entire propulsion system (including mechanics and hydraulics), only the  controls were swapped out. In order to comply with the latest class requirements, the German vessel owner was forced to modernize the “WULF 9”, a 30-year-old ASD tugboat. Aucoin Joins Schottel as U.S. GM

Gary Aucoin has joined Schottel Inc. in Houma, La., as the new General Manager. Aucoin is a dedicated sales expert taking over leadership of the growing U.S. subsidiary. Most recently, from 2010, he held the role of account manager at Wärtsilä with responsibility for both new business development and after sales service in the offshore market. These are already strong areas with further growth potential for Schottel in North America. Aucoin holds a master degree in business administration and 15-years of experience in the North American maritime sector.

SCHOTTEL Now Offering Custom Training

With SCHOTTEL’s new training program, the participants determine the date, location and content. The spectrum extends from courses on individual products to in-depth training with a specific focus, either at company headquarters in Spay or directly on board the trainee’s vessel. The new program covers product- and application-oriented topics. In the product seminars, technical crew members and maintenance personnel acquire expert know-how on individual SCHOTTEL propulsion systems.

Frydenbø SCHOTTEL Grows in Norway

Frydenbø Industri AS represents several brands and companies mainly within marine industry, - with central locations in Oslo, Bergen, Ålesund and Øksfjord. The name Frydenbø is a known brand in Norway with activities in three different areas; marine industry (Frydenbø Industri AS), real estate (Frydenbø Eiendom AS) and cars and leisure boats (Frydenbø AS). In order to have a clearer distinction and focus on the sales and service of SCHOTTEL products, the company Frydenbø Power AS will change its name to Frydenbø SCHOTTEL Nordic AS, handling all SCHOTTEL related sales and service activities. Schottel Introduce New Generation Large Thrusters

Schottel characterize their new generation of Rudderpropellers (SRP) and Twin Propellers (STP) as 'Compact, modular & performance-optimized'. SRP and STP are available with a variety of reduction ratios to suit all common input speeds regardless of whether they are driven by a diesel engine or an electric motor, and the thruster housing has been optimized using CFD techniques and model tests. The thruster is even more compact than the existing models and is a practically self-contained system requiring only a minimum of mechanical and electrical interfacing. The new thruster series offers a high commonality of parts throughout the different reduction ratios – resulting in enhanced spare parts availability.

Nor-Shipping Product Round-Up

Schottel Service Agreement, North America

Schottel Inc. the US American subsidiary of the German manufacturer of propulsion systems, Schottel GmbH, signed a service cooperation agreement with CS Controls INC (CSC) in September 2010 at the occasion of the SMM trade show in Hamburg, Germany. With this agreement, CSC is assigned to undertake repairs, upgrades and overhauls of Schottel thrusters in North America. Schottel Inc, based in St. Rose, Louisiana and CSC, headquartered in Houma, La. with an office in Orange, Calif., are located in close proximity. This ensures optimum training in Schottel propulsion systems and highest Schottel standards with the exclusive use of original Schottel spare parts. After in depths training, CSC engineers and technicians will be included in the Schottel Inc.

SSP Pod Approved For Service

After more than two years of development and successful performance trials at Howaldswerke-Deutsche Werft AG in Kiel, the Siemens-Schottel Propulsor (SSP) consortium was granted approval for the new SSP marine propulsion system. Classification society Det Norske Veritas was responsible for technical acceptance of the propulsion system for worldwide service. The SSP is the result of a successful cooperation between two German marine industry stalwarts, Siemens Marine Engineering Subdivision and Messrs Schottel of Spay. Work began in 1997 on the development of a marine propulsion "pod" system that would be offering not only economic advantages, but superior technological performance.

Dr. Detlef Reinsberg was elected the new managing director of Schottel GmbH & Co. in Spay/Rhine, Germany. Reinsberg, who began his career as a financial director with ABB in Manheim, and later with the Fresenius Group in Bad Homburg, will spearhead a group of companies whose main plant reached sales of $61.3 million in 1999.

SCHOTTEL Strengthens Middle East Service

After the establishment of SCHOTTEL Middle East FZE (SME), a subsidiary of the renowned German company SCHOTTEL GMbH, as the new hub for the Middle East region, SCHOTTEL made a further step to enhance customer service across the region. ATOS International L.L.C. will be the authorized SCHOTTEL Service and Spares provider in the UAE, Bahrain and Oman, working in close cooperation with SME in Dubai. ATOS has a long experience in SCHOTTEL propulsion systems as service agent and with this knowledge and the support of the local SME office, a strong Service network for the region has been created. ATOS service staff will undergo in depth training at the SCHOTTEL facilities.

STX, Schottel to Produce Propulsion Systems

The South Korean company STX Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. and Schottel will be cooperating in the area of large rudder propeller systems for underwater installation, as used on drilling rigs, for example. Within the framework of a corresponding licence agreement, STX will manufacture rudder propellers covering a power range from 2000 to 5800 kW, while Schottel will supply the core components for these systems in the form of the L gearbox. The first STX-Schottel Rudder propellers are due for delivery in the second half of 2010.

Schottel Reorganizes

With a revised product range and a new corporate structure, Germany’s Schottel announced that its headquarters in Spay/Rhine and Schottel Antriebstechnik GmbH in Wismar have been merged to form the new Schottel GmbH with its registered office in Spay and branches in Wismar and Hamburg. Schottel Schiffsmaschinen GmbH, which is also based at the Wismar location, will continue to develop and manufacture controllable-pitch propeller systems as an independent company. The core competencies of Schottel GmbH are the development, production and servicing of steerable propulsion and maneuvering systems such as the Rudderpropeller and its electric variant the Combi Drive, the Schottel Pump-Jet and the SCHOTTEL Transverse Thrusters.

Schottel Mourns Gragen Death

Uwe Gragen, Dipl.-Ing., sales and project manager for SCHOTTEL GmbH & Co. in Spay/Rhine, and responsible for worldwide sales of propulsion systems for tugboats and ocean-going vessels, has died. Uwe Gragen passed away quite unexpectedly on the evening of 13 May 2005 after returning home from work. He leaves behind a wife and three children. Born on 21 August 1943 in Königsberg, he undertook his apprenticeship from 1960 to 1963 at the Stülcken shipyard in Hamburg, a city in which he was to remain to study naval architecture. From 1966 to 1971 he worked as project engineer at Orenstein & Koppel in Lübeck. Uwe Gragen had placed his considerable expertise as a naval architect at the disposal of the propulsion specialist SCHOTTEL since 1 October 1971…
