Autonomous Surveillance PowerBuoy Deployed Off NJ Coast
Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) have deployed the buoy 35 miles off the coast and in 43 meters of water depth, to perform in-ocean tests on its proprietary APB to further validate the technology's capacity for expanded ocean surveillance. DHS Congratulates MTS
The Marine Technology Society was recently honored by the Department of Homeland Security with a letter identifying the content of its May/June 2011 issue of the MTS Journal as one of “paramount importance to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).” The MTS Journal focused its issue on maritime domain awareness and port resilience research and development. “I appreciate that MTS has showcased the research underway at the DHS Science & Technology Directorate (S&T) Center of Excellence (COE) for Maritime and Port Security. This COE’s work complements S&T’s other research and development efforts in support of the DHS components whose mission it is to secure our coasts and ports, particularly the United States Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection.
Homeland Security Science & Tech. Meeting Scheduled
The Homeland Security Science & Technology Advisory Committee, sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security, will meet in Potomac, Md. on February 26-27, 2004 in a partially closed session. Members will receive briefings on the mission and organization of the Department and the mission and approaches of the Science & Technology Directorate.
$7.9B USCG Reauthorization Approved by Subcommittee
Legislation to authorize more than $7.9 billion for the Coast Guard for Fiscal Year 2005, including $1.1 billion for the Deepwater project, was unanimously approved by the U.S. House Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee today. Deepwater is the Coast Guard’s program to replace and modernize its operational capital assets. The Coast Guard’s fleet is rapidly deteriorating, leading to higher safety risks and maintenance costs, and a lower state of readiness. At a Subcommittee hearing last week, the Commandant of the Coast Guard expressed concern that assets are wearing out faster than anticipated.
