This Day in Naval History - Feb. 20

From the Navy News Service 1815 - USS Constitution, under Capt. Charles Stewart, captures HMS Cyane and sloop-of-war Levant. 1962 - Marine Corps Lt. Col. John Glenn becomes the first American to orbit the Earth. His flight in Friendship 7 (Mercury 6) consisted of three orbits in 88 minutes at a velocity of 17,544 mph, with a high altitude of 162.2 statute miles. Recovery was by USS Noa (DD 841). 1962 - USS Dixie (AD 14) rescues the lone crewman aboard a sailing yawl adrift for four days. 1974 - The S-3A Viking anti-submarine warfare aircraft was introduced officially and given to Sea Control Squadron 41.

Enterprise Strike Group Arrives in 5th Fleet

The Enterprise Carrier Strike Group (CSG) entered the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations Aug. 1 to conduct Maritime Security Operations (MSO) in regional waters and provide air support to ground forces operating in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Enterprise CSG is part of the ongoing rotation of U.S. warships to the region.

"Big E" Deploys

The Enterprise Carrier Strike group (CSG) transit the Atlantic Ocean in formation. This is Enterprise’s second deployment within the past 14 months. Big E returned from its most recent deployment Nov. 18. Enterprise is the flagship for Carrier Strike Group 12, which include the guided-missile destroyers USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), USS James E.

USS John C. Stennis Returns to OEF Missions Following Port Visit

USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 returned to the North Arabian Sea June 14 following its third port visit in the Middle East. Starting June 15, CVW-9 will conduct missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and will provide close air-power support and reconnaissance to International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops on the ground in Afghanistan. ISAF is comprised of more than 35,000 troops, with contributions from 37 nations. “We have met every operational commitment assigned to perfection and have maintained a level of operational readiness second to none,” said Stennis’ Commanding Officer, Capt. Brad Johanson.

USS John C. Stennis Now Operating in Persian Gulf

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) conducts operations in the Arabian Sea. The John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group is on regularly scheduled deployments in support of Maritime Security Operations (MSO). Theodore Roosevelt Returns From Deployment

Thousands of friends and family members gathered at Naval Station Norfolk for the return of USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), March 11, following a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf in support of the global war on terrorism. The early morning arrival of Theodore Roosevelt didn’t deter the crowd. Family members waited in the early Saturday morning chill, anticipating the return of their loved ones. “It’s like Christmas all over again,” said Diane Drach, mother of Machinist's Mate Fireman Ashley Drach, who is stationed aboard Theodore Roosevelt. While deployed, Theodore Roosevelt and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8 launched 5,412 sorties totaling nearly 19,362 flight hours in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Maritime Security Operations (MSO).
