Christmas Ship to Deliver 1,200 Trees
Chicagoâs Christmas Ship Committee, Coast Guard set for 15th anniversary of re-enactment, delivery of 1,200 Christmas trees for deserving families. The Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw, serving once again as this yearâs âChristmas Shipâ and loaded with more than 1,200 Christmas trees, is returning to Chicago for a two-day event re-enacting what was an annual Chicago tradition in the late 1800s and early 1900s. A welcoming for the Mackinaw, by the Chicago Christmas Ship Committee, is scheduled for Friday at 8 a.m.
Toledo Maritime Academy Hosts Admiralâs Ball Weekend
The Maritime Academy of Toledo Foundation wrapped up a successful Admiralâs Ball Weekend on Saturday, April 12, with the fourth Annual Admiralâs Ball and Charity Auction. More than 130 people attended the event which brought in $22,000 for the educational needs for cadets at the school. The theme for this yearâs event was âChart Their Course for Success With Usâ. It was sponsored by The Toledo Blade, Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority, Dickenson Wright PLLC, Genoa Bank, IBEW, Local 8, as well as Ed Conn and Saga Schoffner.
Maritime Legend Passes Away
Captain Robert M. Cusick Jr., a merchant marine officer who survived the wreck of the SS Marine Electric and then helped lead a major reform of US maritime safety standards, died peacefully in his sleep in New Hampshire on Thursday, September 12, 2013, according to Carol Cusick, his daughter. He was 90 years old. Port of Houston Upcoming Youth Maritime Expo
The third annual Maritime Youth Expo will be held at the Port of Houston's Bayport Cruise Terminal, Saturday 6, April 2013. Hundreds of area high school maritime students and Sea Scouts will have the opportunity to hear mariners talk about opportunities on tow boats, harbor tugs and barges, learn about maritime salvage and see salvor equipment in action, and watch state-of-the-art Coast Guard helicopters and small boats perform on-water demonstrations. Coast Guard Rescues Sea Scouts
More than two dozen Sea Scouts were rescued by the Coast Guard this week after their boat began taking on water in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta near Concord, authorities said. According to Petty Officer Levi Read, the crew of the 85-ft. SSS Farallon reported that there were eight inches of water in the bilge shortly before noon and sent out a distress call. The Coast Guard sent out a helicopter and boats and rescued 33 people, 27 of whom were Sea Scouts. They were put on a ferry and taken to Vallejo. The flooding on the Farallon was controlled, and the boat maneuvered under its own power to Alameda for repairs, Read said.
