New York Court Grants Interim Relief to Marco Polo

Netherlands-based Marco Polo Seatrade BV has been granted interim relief by a New York court which will allow it to continue to operate the business in the ordinary course under Chapter 11 protection. The court granted Marco Polo, a company managed by Seaarland Shipping Management, the right to continue to operate and pay all operating expenses, the right to continue to pay employees and crew, the right to continue all cash management procedures, and the right to continue to maintain all insurance - all in the ordinary course of business. The management team continues to operate the business and the company will continue to honor all of its charter obligations during the pendency of the court protection.

Cargoship Maritime, Magellano Marine to Restructure

Cargoship Maritime BV and Magellano Marine CV, Netherlands-based vessel operating companies managed by Seaarland Shipping Management BV (Amsterdam) have appointed Lazard and Venice Shipping & Logistics (VSL) as restructuring advisors. They will assist the companies to complete the restructuring process begun last year when thirteen owners of twenty-two vessels with time charters with Cargoship Maritime BV and two bareboat charters held by Magellano Marine CV were asked to agree to modified terms. Antonio Zacchello, managing director of Seaarland Shipping Management said, "Towards the end of last year we asked the owners we partner to adjust with us to the new realities of the marketplace.

Economou Backs $300m Green Recycling Initiative

George Economou and broking house Banchero and Costa Spa have both invested in the Green Recycling Initiative launched two weeks ago. The $300m GRI aims to integrate the needs of steel producers to be able to produce ethically sourced steel from traceable scrap and the needs of shipowners to recycle ships in a more environmentally friendly manner. The launch investors were Italy-based Siba Ships and Netherlands-based Seaarland Shipping Management. The Green Recycling Initiative (GRI) is building a fund to buy around 120 obsolete ships during 2009/10. Investors will be drawn from both the shipping and steelmaking industries. It will begin…

Nordic Seaarland Names New Carriers

Nordic Seaarland Tankers BV has named two new 37,500 dwt product/chemical tankers building at Korea's Hyundai Mipo yard. Mt Nordic Agnetha was delivered on 8th May 2009, while Mt Amy will be delivered in July. Both vessels will be managed by Netherlands-based Seaarland Shipping Management, and will be entered into the Handytankers pool. The two vessels bring the fleet of the Nordic Seaarland joint venture to five modern product/chemical carriers. Nordic Seaarland Tankers BV is a joint venture company established in April 2006 between Seaarland and Nordic Tankers to own modern product tankers.

Seaarland, Roxana Establish Tanker Pool

Seaarland Shipping Management and Athens-based Roxana Shipping have established a new pool for LR1 tankers. The Global Tanker Pool will be operated from Seaarland’s Asian arm, Seaarland Management Services Singapore, and has commenced operations with six modern LR1 tankers. The pool manager is Karl Arthur Braein, previously head of chartering in Asia-Pacific for ConocoPhillips. Antonio Zacchello, managing director of Seaarland said, “We have committed five new, owned ships and one chartered ship shared with Roxana to the pool, and Roxana has committed four ships with delivery starting by the end of 2009. We aim to attract other long-term-minded owners/operators of LR1 tankers and build the pool to around 20 vessels.

Seaarland Tanker Escapes Pirate Attack

The 74,000 dwt Liberian-flag panamax tanker Lia, commercially managed by Amsterdam-based Seaarland Shipping Management, and technically managed by Motia Compagnia di Navigazione, has escaped a pirate attack due to swift action by Euronav warships. The vessel’s crew, all 26 of whom are Indian nationals, are unhurt and the ship is proceeding normally on its voyage. The Lia had loaded its cargo of naphtha in Amsterdam/Limassol and was proceeding to its discharge destination in China. The vessel arrived at the meeting point in the Gulf of Aden and, as per company policy, awaited a naval escort to assist the vessel in the transit of the Gulf of Aden. The vessel was given a military escort by a Chinese warship along with three other vessels.

Motia Selects IMOS

Veson Nautical, the US-based maritime software developer delivering chartering, operations and accounting solutions for cargo transportation, announced that Motia Compagnia di Navigazione based in Venice, Italy has chosen Vesonís Integrated Maritime Operations System (IMOS). Motia is the technical manager for the Netherlands-based Seaarland Shipping fleet, which implemented Vesonís IMOS last year. IMOS has been managing all aspects of cargo transportation for Seaarlandís fleet, which includes 11 handymax product tankers, 3 panamax bulk carriers, 4 Aframax Tankers, and 3 Panamax tankers. The fleet also includes 23 chartered tankers ranging from 35,000 to 160,000 dwt.

Seaarland and OSG Set up Suezmax Pool

Amsterdam-based Seaarland Shipping Management and New York-based Overseas Shipholding Group have set up Suezmax International, a commercial pool which will initially operate eight tankers. The Suezmax International Pool is co-managed by in and OSG Ship Management Inc. in . OSG and Seaarland have committed eight ships to the pool so far: the Overseas London, Overseas Newcastle, Genmar Hope, Elisewin, and four newbuildings due for delivery from Nantong Rongsheng Shipbuilding, during  2009. Seaarland has also ordered three 165,000 dwt suezmax tankers on May 30, 2008 to be built at Hyundai Heavy Industries, for delivery in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarter 2011. The intention is to commit these ships to the new pool. The Suezmax International pool will have two chartering offices.

Seaarland Sets up in Singapore

Seaarland Shipping Management has set up a commercial office in Singapore and made a strategic move into both the large dry bulk and suezmax tanker sectors. The new Singapore company, Seaarland Management Services Singapore, will manage the commercial business for four 115,000 dwt mini-cape bulkers ordered by Seaarland last week from China's New Times Shipyard, and spearhead expansion for the group into Asia. At the same time Seaarland has taken a suezmax tanker on a five year time charter as a preliminary to extending its existing aframax and product tanker fleet into the suezmax market.

Bulk Cargo Ship Aground in Chesapeake Bay

Coast Guard Sector Baltimore personnel are attempting to free a 711-ft. vessel carrying coal had gone aground while transiting the Port of Baltimore, according to the Shipping Times. Coast Guard personnel were notified at on February 28 that the Liberain flagged motor vessel Montrose had gone soft aground in the mouth of the Choptank River. The Coast Guard, along with the Moran Towing tugboats April and Hariet Lane, attempted to free the vessel during high tide but were unsuccessful. The Coast Guard is continuing to monitor the situation. So far no damage or pollution has been reported T7he 3831 grt Montrose is operated by Seaarland Shipping Management Ges.m.b.H., Austria and was built in 2002 by Sanoyas Hishino Meisho, Japan. Seaarland, Nordic Tankers Sign Joint Venture

Seaarland Shipping Management and Nordic Tankers signed a joint venture that will see both of these companies enter the Handysize product carrier market. The joint venture will involve investment in modern second-hand vessels as well as new buildings. The vessels will be jointly owned by both partners in varying proportions. The first acquisition by the joint venture, the 2000-built 35,820 dwt Hanne, is to be concluded soon. Seaarland will be fully responsible for managing the vessels which will be operated in the Handytankers pool, currently made up of vessels from Seaarland, Maersk, D'Amico, Motia and CST.
