Offshore Fracking: Accord Reached to stop offshore fracking in California
A conservation group said the federal government must stop approving offshore fracking from oil platforms in California's Santa Barbara Channel under the settlement of a lawsuit it filed. The group, the Center for Biological Diversity, in a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, had challenged what it said was the U.S. Department of the Interior's practice of rubber-stamping fracking off California's coast without engaging the public or analyzing fracking's threats to ocean ecosystems, coastal communities and marine life. FMC Honors Crowley for Green Initiatives
Crowley Maritime Corp. has been honored with the 2015 Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) Chairman’s Earth Day Award in recognition of the organization’s companywide environmental stewardship initiatives. The announcement was made during a Professional Environmental Management Association luncheon held in Seal Beach, Calif., earlier this week. FMC Chairman Mario Cordero will present a plaque commemorating the award to Crowley during a future recognition ceremony in Washington D.C.
FMC Chairman Addresses PEMA Ports Program
U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) Chairman Mario Cordero addressed the Professional Environmental Management Association (PEMA) at its Annual Ports Program held in Seal Beach, California. The Chairman spoke on the subject of congestion at U.S. ports and the vital role of sustainable development of ports and related transportation infrastructure. Chairman Cordero described causes of, and the need for solutions to congestion, with a focus on the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Chairman Cordero also explained the Commission’s efforts to facilitate discussions among stakeholders.
Navy Commissions Dewey at Seal Beach
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has approved Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, Calif., as the commissioning location of Pre-commissioning Unit (PCU) Dewey, the Navy's newest and most technologically advanced guided-missile destroyer. The event will be the first time a U.S. Navy warship has been commissioned at Seal Beach. Deborah Mullen, wife of Adm. Mike G. Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is the ship's sponsor. She had previously christened the ship during a ceremony at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss., Jan. 26, 2008. The new destroyer honors Adm.
