Hydrex Conducts Underwater Stern Tube Seal Repair in Algeciras

Last month, a Hydrex diver team carried out an underwater stern tube seal repair on a ro-ro ship berthed in Algeciras, Spain.The ship was suffering from an oil leak, making an on-site repair necessary. Hydrex: Stern Tube Seal Repairs

Recently Hydrex carried out six stern tube seal operations all across Europe in a very short time span.Here is a review of two of the repairs: In Flushing the four damaged seals of a 268-meter container vessel were replaced underwater with our flexible mobdock technique. In Antwerp a seal operation was performed on a trimmed 185-meter general cargo ship. Both repairs were carried out in cooperation with the OEM.Repair in stages to fit the ship’s scheduleBecause the container vessel had a very tight schedule, Hydrex proposed to carry out preparatory work during an earlier stop in Dunkirk.

Underwater Seal Repairs Avoid Drydock and Off-Fire Costs

Following a spate of stern tube seal failures, Antwerp-based Hydrex has reiterated its capability in carrying out repairs to stern tube seals during a ship’s routine port visit, saving the expense and loss of revenue of unscheduled drydocking. Stern tube seals can suffer undue wear or damage due to a variety of causes, causing water ingress and oil leaks. With ever-tightening environmental regulations resulting in heavy penalties for oil pollution, rapid and timely repairs are essential.

Roxtec Sees Rise in Cruise Ship Repair Work

Manchester cable safety seal manufacturer Roxtec has reported increased demand for its cruise ship cable and pipe seals. The firm has seen a 67 percent rise in sales for its watertight pipe and cable seals in the U.K. marine market in the last 12 months. Roxtec UK managing director Graham O’Hare said the firm’s plastic pipe seals are suited for cruise liners as they help reduce weight, ensuring operators use less fuel, lower a ship’s emissions and save money. “Roxtec seals can be used on deck penetrations and bulkheads and are increasingly being used on marine equipment too,” he said.

North Sea Accommodation Module Sealed with Roxtec

Global safety seal manufacturer Roxtec has completed a project supplying cable and pipe seals to a six level accommodation module on the Golden Eagle development. The living quarters houses 70 self-contained cabins for up to 140 people. It also includes a gymnasium, dining room, offices and a medical suite. Roxtec International AB, manufacturer of modular pipe and cable penetration sealing systems, has acquired Sleev-It Fire Systems Ltd of the United Kingdom. The acquisition of Sleev-It will enhance the Roxtec line of sealing products by providing shipyards with a lightweight firestop for plastic pipes. Sleev-It marine penetration seals expand the already diverse product offerings of Roxtec for fire-sealing in A & B fire-rated sections. Sleev-It Fire Systems Ltd will continue to operate under its current name.

Underwater Bonding Seals the Deal

Miami Diver has led the development of a unique universal steel habitat to efficiently carry out underwater repairs on almost any ship. In July 1999, a leading cruise ship operator approached Miami Diver Inc. with a damaged lip type stern seal on one of its vessels. The 73,912-gt ship was reporting sea water ingress from the starboard side shaft seal, and the cruise operator was looking for options to prevent an untimely and expensive unscheduled dry-docking. This was a unique situation in the underwater bonding of a lip-type shaft seal had reportedly never been accomplished before. Miami Diver immediately responded and called upon the network companies based in Vancouver, B.C.
