IMO Brings Port Issues to the Fore

Global trade by sea is dependent on the interconnection between ships, ports and people - and everyone needs to be involved, from port operators, to regulators, to maritime security experts and innovators in technology. The Special Port Event was supported by IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim, in collaboration with the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH). Port of Rotterdam: 2017 in Review

Over the past year, 29,646 seagoing vessels entered the port of Rotterdam, up more than 600 from 2016's 29,022. The number of incidents in the port fell from 159 to 129, and included one ‘serious accident’ involving an inland vessel that went adrift after hitting a groyne with its rudder. According to National Harbour Master René de Vries, the decrease in the number of minor incidents can be explained by the Port Authority’s investments in infrastructure in recent years: “Thanks to the new buoy configurations and dolphins, there were considerably fewer minor bollard-ship collisions and fewer barges went adrift due to bad weather,” he said. Efficiency in inspections continued to increase further in 2017, according to the port.

Giuliani Rolls Out PortStat Program

During the port security conference of the International Airport and Seaport Police last night, Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani announced his intention to implement a new port security law enforcement program based upon the widely praised "CompStat" initiative he launched as mayor of New York City. As with Compstat, the "PortStat" initiative would gather statistics on arrests, complaints, suspicious activities and other intelligence information that would detect criminal, security-breach and terrorist activity trends at airports and seaports around the country. The resulting intelligence data would assist federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in adjusting their security strategies in an ongoing and pro-active basis.
