U-Ming's next bulk carrier newbuild being built in China will feature an underwater hull cleaning robot.The Taiwan-headquartered shipping company has signed a commercial agreement with builder Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard (SWS) and Norway's Jotun for the Jotun Hull Skating Solutions (HSS) to be installed aboard one of U-Ming’s four liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual- fuel Tier III 190,000 dwt bulk carriers to be built by SWS in Shanghai to support the long term charter with mining giant Anglo American.

Even as shipowners enjoy record low bunker fuel pricing, the search for hull cleaning and fuel-saving optimization continues. Jotun, which recently launched 'hull skater' hull grooming, found a willing partner in Wallenius Wilhelmsen -- an operator of a fleet of 126 RoRo vessels, 11 marine terminals and 71 processing centers globally -- to put the hull skater to the test.For the past decade, Wallenius Wilhelmsen has produced an annual Sustainability Report, describing initiatives undertaken to reduce the company’s emissions and safeguard life below the water line, among other target areas.

Jotun unveiled the next-generation of its SeaForce biocidal antifouling range, with three new products featuring Hydractive technology. Jotun originally launched its SeaForce range in 2004. In the four years since its coating with Jotun’s Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) system, COSCO Europe has reached new heights of efficiency, cost control and environmental performance. Figures released by Jotun show that the 2008-built, 10,062 TEU container ship has sliced fuel costs by $4.5million and reduced CO2 emissions by some 29,500 tonnes (against market average figures), giving it market leading hull performance. HPS combines Jotun’s advanced SeaQuantum X200 antifouling, enhanced technical service, performance analysis according to ISO 19030 and a high performance guarantee.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has now published the long-awaited ISO 19030, a new standard conceived to measure changes in ship-specific hull and propeller performance. According to Jotun, which has led the industry in the standard’s development, the move has the potential to reduce the industry’s green house gas emissions by 10%, while saving operators up to USD 30 billion in annual energy costs. ISO 19030 has been more than three years in the making. It’s seen a collaboration of 53 expert stakeholders from throughout the industry working together to develop a uniform framework for measuring the efficacy of solutions improving hull and propeller performance.

Jotun believes the European Union’s decision to approve the use of copper in marine antifoulings will ensure continued delivery of powerful benefits for both the shipping industry and environment. Copper is a key ingredient of most antifouling coatings, valued for its ability to provide the best overall balance of environmental protection and cost savings. By preventing the settling, growth and spread of a wide range of fouling species, copper plays a key role in ensuring clean vessel hulls.

The 17 National Standardization Bodies represented on ISO’s Marine Environment Protection Sub-committee (ISO-TC8-SC2) has voted in favor of circulating ISO 19030 parts 1 and 2 as Draft International Standards. In anticipation of final approval of the standard expected next year, Jotun informs it will update Performance Guarantees offered as a part of its Hull Performance Solutions so that they are fully compliant with the standard. According to Geir Axel Oftedahl, Jotun’s Business Development Director, Hull Performance Solutions, the purpose of establishing these standards is to prescribe practical methods for measuring changes in ship-specific hull and propeller performance and to define performance indicators for hull and propeller maintenance, repair and retrofit activities.

Jotun Marine Coatings said Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) will apply Jotun’s Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) on a number of new and existing vessels. With almost 500 vessels, MSC has one of the world’s largest containership fleets. To help the company reduce bunkering fuel costs and associated CO2 emissions, MSC undertook a program to improve fuel efficiency in 2011. As part of a $2.3 billion newbuilding program, United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has reached an agreement with Jotun for the provision of antifouling coatings for 11 new container vessels. Jotun, the global leader in marine antifouling coatings, has signed a landmark agreement with Maersk Line to supply Hull Performance Solutions with SeaQuantumX200 for the Triple-E new build project. The Triple-Es are the world’s largest ships - renowned as much for their energy efficiency as their size. By upgrading to HPS with Jotun’s top-of-the-line SeaQuantum X200 antifouling coating, the Triple-E ships are expected to reinforce their energy efficiency advantage. Maersk Line has ordered a series of 20 Triple-E vessels, with 10 now already in or entering service, and a further 10 under construction at DSME in South Korea. Jotun Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) has launched the HPS Newbuilding Solution at Kormarine in Busan, South Korea. The HPS Newbuilding solution is aimed at yards delivering vessels with eco-design and who want to maximize the energy efficiency at both speed trial and in operation. “With HPS Newbuilding Solution Jotun enables yards to become more competitive when bidding for eco-ship projects. Eitzen Chemical A/S has decided to implement Jotun's Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) on two of their largest chemical carriers.
