Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) said it has hired Jasmine Gonzalez as a senior project coordinator. Gonzalez will support multiple departments with project execution and development of enhanced business reporting and procedures. She reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is positioned in Seattle.Gonzalez brings a broad background of marine industry knowledge and experience gained through previous employment at a Pacific Northwest tug and barge operator, a shipyard and a salvage company.

According to the findings of a new report conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) on behalf of Transportation Institute (TI), the domestic maritime industry in Washington ranks sixth among all American states for jobs and labor income relating to the Jones Act.The industry employs more than 22,500 individuals, produces $6.12 billion for the local economy, and generates more than $1.5 billion in worker income.Regionally, the same study shows that the domestic maritime industry employs over 37,590 individuals, supports $2.5 billion in worker income, and produces nearly $10 billion for the Pacific Northwest regional economy.Washington Senator Maria Cantwell joined business and government leaders from around the region at the Seattle Maritime Festival Breakfast…

The Port of Seattle presented Holland America Line with its sixth consecutive Green Gateway Award. The Port of Seattle also presented Seattle’s hometown cruise line with the Technology Innovator award. The Port of Seattle presents the Green Gateway Awards annually to cruise and commercial lines that call at the port and whose environmental efforts are deemed worthy of recognition. “Holland America Line’s commitment to the environment is something we’re very proud of, and to be recognized for the sixth year by the Port of Seattle with a Green Gateway Award is a testament to our dedication and focus,” said Orlando Ashford, Holland America Line’s president. “We are continuously seeking more ways to be an environmental steward and responsibly sail the world’s oceans.

Holland America Line was named the 2014 Marine Environmental Business of the Year by the Port of Seattle. Port commissioner Courtney Gregoire presented the award to Keith Taylor, senior vice president, fleet operations, at the Seattle Propeller Club’s Maritime Festival Lunch held Tuesday, May 13, 2014, aboard Carnival Miracle, which was docked at Port of Seattle. The cruise line was recognized for its efforts to reduce its global environmental footprint through a series of objectives that greatly reduce consumption of fuel and water, engine emissions and generation of solid waste, along with increasing recycling across its fleet of 15 ships.

The Seattle Propeller Club announced the winner of the 2013 Puget Sound Maritime Achievement Award as Captain John Veentjer, Puget Sound Marine Exchange Executive Director, aboard Princess Cruises cruise vessel Sapphire Princess while berthed on Pier 66 at the Port of Seattle’s Bell Street Cruise Terminal during the 62nd annual Seattle Maritime Festival Luncheon. The Club also shared news of the selection of Captain John Dwyer, Officer In Charge, Marine Inspection and the Chief of the Inspection Division at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound, as this year’s recipient of the Seattle Propeller Club’s Public Official of the Year Award.

On Saturday, May 11, more than 30 boats will participate in the 28th Annual U.S. Oil and Refining Seattle Tugboat Race Championships, the largest tugboat race in the world. The race will run from noon to 3 p.m. as part of family fun day at the 2013 Vigor Seattle Maritime Festival, which will take place from Pier 66 and Bell Harbor Marina, 2225 Alaskan Way, Seattle. The race will start at the Grain Terminal, Pier 86, and end at Pier 66. Teams from various maritime businesses will compete from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the WorkBoat World Invitational Boatbuilding Competition at Pier 66.

The Vigor Seattle Maritime Festival runs May 7-11, 2013, with fun, food and maritime facts for the whole family on the Seattle Waterfront. “The Vigor Seattle Maritime Festival is a celebration of the maritime workers, industries and commerce that make Seattle great,” said Fred Kiga, Vice President of Government Affairs at Vigor Industrial, the region’s largest shipbuilding and repair company and the festival’s title sponsor. “The area’s $10 billion maritime industry employs over 17,000 people to build our ships, move our people and products, bring us fresh seafood and defend our country.” Kiga said. Vigor Industrial made two promotions in its sales and marketing team, advancing Bryan Nichols to Manager of Sales and Marketing and Grant Fosheim to Sales and Marketing Associate. Bryan Nichols joined Vigor Industrial in 2011 as a sales representative. He will now serve as Manager of Vigor’s Sales and Marketing division, which is focused on the new build and major refit markets. He will supervise Vigor’s sales staff and play a key role in developing the company’s overall sales and marketing strategy.

The largest tugboat race in the world, the 27th Annual U.S. Oil & Refining Seattle Tugboat Race Championships, runs from noon to 3 p.m on Saturday May 12th 2012. More than 30 boats will participate in the races, which start at the Grain Terminal, Pier 86, and end at Pier 66. Go here for a full race schedule. Teams from various maritime businesses will compete from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Pacific Maritime Magazine Quick & Dirty Boatbuilding Competition at Pier 66. The teams have just $50 to build a finished craft and win a race later in the day. Judging on the boats is at 3 p.m., with the race at 4 p.m. Other Family Fun Day events include a survival suit contest in Elliott Bay, a competitive chowder cook-off, harbor tours and special activities for children. Crowley Maritime Corporation was recently recognized for its environmental stewardship by the Port of the Seattle and Seattle Propeller Club, which teamed up to present the company with its second-consecutive honorable mention award for Marine Environmental Business of the Year. The awards ceremony took place at the 60th Annual Maritime Festival Luncheon aboard Holland America's cruise ship Zaandam in Seattle. The event, attended by more than 500 people from the regional maritime industry, marked the culmination of Seattle's annual Maritime Festival.

Crowley Maritime Corporation was recently recognized for its environmental stewardship by the Port of the Seattle and Seattle Propeller Club, which teamed to present the company with its runner up award for Marine Environmental Business of the Year. The awards ceremony took place at the 59th Annual Maritime Festival Luncheon aboard the cruise ship Carnival Spirit in Seattle. The event, attended by more than 500 people from the regional maritime industry, marked the culmination of Seattle's annual Maritime Festival.

In recognition of its measurable efforts to reduce its environmental footprint both at sea and in port, Holland America Line has been selected as the 2010 Marine Environmental Business of the Year by the Port of Seattle and the Seattle Propeller Club. "We applaud and congratulate Holland America Line in winning the 2010 Marine Environmental Business of the Year Award," said Port of Seattle CEO Tay Yoshitani. In the last three years Holland America Line challenged its ships to operate at 98 percent of their fuel budget, and in each of those years the ships consumed 96 percent of their fuel budget. Ships based in Seattle during the Alaska cruise season from May through September eliminate diesel engine emissions through a combination of fuel conservation and shore power usage.

Port of Tacoma’s Commissioner, Ted Bottiger, is this year’s Seattle Propeller Club’s Elected Official of the Year Award recipient. The honor, bestowed annually at the Seattle Maritime Festival’s Maritime Luncheon, was presented on May 9 at a luncheon aboard the Royal Caribbean International's Serenade of the Seas. The luncheon was co-sponsored by the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the Seattle Propeller Club. Each year the Seattle Propeller Club recognizes a local elected official whose outstanding work or service has made a significant contribution to maritime commerce in the Pacific Northwest.
