Fincantieri Floats Out MSC Seashore

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri announced Thursday it has floated out the new cruise ship MSC Seashore at its shipyard in Monfalcone. The vessel has been moved to a wet dock where interior outfitting work will continue until delivery to MSC Cruises in July 2021.MSC Seashore, which will be MSC Cruises’ longest ship at 339 metres and the largest and most innovative ever built in Italy, is the third of four vessels in MSC Cruises’ Seaside class, following MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview launched in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

MSC Cruises Returns to Thordon to Keep Seashore Clean

Fincantieri: New Design for MSC Seashore

A traditional maritime coin ceremony  took place at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, when the keel was laid for MSC Seashore. At the milestone event, MSC Cruises revealed details of the significantly transformed overall design and new features of the ship.MSC Seashore will be the Company’s longest ship – 339 meters – when she enters service in June 2021, the first of two enriched “Seaside Evo” Class ships with the latest available environmental technology, extended public spaces, more cabins and the highest ratio of outdoor space per guest of any ship in the company’s fleet.

MSC Cruises Orders 4 Luxury Ships at Fincantieri

Geneva headquartered MSC Cruises announced plans to enter the ultra-luxury cruise segment with a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the construction of four new vessels from Italian builder Fincantieri. The second ship in the MSC Cruises’ Seaside class, MSC Seaview, has entered the final phase of construction at the Monfalcone shipyard in Italy, where MSC Cruises and FINCANTIERI celebrated the vessel’s float out. Great Lakes Dredging Awards Announced

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation announced that it was recently awarded four contracts with an approximate value of $93 million. Great Lakes received two awards for coastal protection work required along the East Coast as a result of the extensive damage caused by Super Storm Sandy in 2012 and other more recent storms. The first award is a $30 million contract that involves sand replenishment and dune building from Kismet to Seaview on Fire Island, New York. Approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of sand will be dredged and pumped onto the beach. This barrier island helps protect back-bay communities along Great South Bay and Moriches Bay. Work is expected to be complete by December 2016.

Mobile Dredging Bags Shark River Contract

The New Jersey Department of Transportation has awarded a $7.6 million contract to dredge the Shark River in Monmouth County after the effects of Superstorm Sandy created a greater need to complete the long-delayed project. Mobile Dredging and Pumping Co. of Chester, Pa. will remove approximately 102,000 cubic yards of sediment comprised of sand and silt to "restore the state channels to allow safe passage for recreational and commercial traffic," according to a state release. Crews will hydraulically dredge the sentiment and pump it through a secure welded pipeline to dewatering locations -- a portion of the Belmar Marina parking lot in Belmar and Seaview Island in Neptune and then truck it to the Monmouth County Reclamation Center for "beneficial use," the release says.

A barge transporting a large quantity of petroleum moves slowly down the middle of the Parana River in South America. Though it is early evening, the pilot is enclosed in torrid heat, fetid smells from the jungle's rotting vegetation, rampant palms that reach toward him on each side of the river, and the strange, floating beauty of blue and purple hyacinths, now swaying in his wake. The insect cries are deafening, louder than a New York subway. He does not pause to swat a mosquito, for there are none. Too small for this world, they have themselves been devoured by the far more populous insects half a foot long. Floating beside the barge are frogs larger than a small dog, the easy prey of jacares, another bloated amphibian that can outgrow a crocodile.

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) opened its recently upgraded ship's bridge simulator training facility at HMAS Watson in Sydney on 25th March 2011. Featuring a host of new full mission and desktop simulators from Kongsberg Maritime, the new facility represents one of the most advanced naval training centres in the world and will be used by RAN cadets to learn to pilot the next generation of warships, alongside a wide range of critical training applications, including anti-piracy.

Derecktor Eyes Military Deal

Derecktor Shipyards could be building high-speed ferries for the U.S. military in Bridgeport if it and its partners can edge out some tough competition for what could be a $234m defense contract. Exactly how many consortiums have bid on the Joint High Speed Vessel for the Army and Navy is unclear. Only two groups have verified they are going after the contract to develop a completely new vessel for the Navy. Derecktor and its partners, Maersk Line Ltd., which is the U.S. subsidiary of Dutch A.P. Moller Maersk Group, and naval architects Gibbs & Cox confirmed they're in the contest this month. Shipyard files Chapter 11, but Derecktor Maintains its Course to Grow

Derecktor Shipyards Conn., LLC last month filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. The company said the filing was the result of a single contract dispute, and that it is still busy and fully staffed, working on several newbuild projects, including a contract to build a massive 85.6-m motor yacht, a 45-m catamaran and a pair of tugboats for Boston Towing and Transport. In addition, the Derecktor yard in Connecticut has a building slot open starting September 2008, as well as a build slot available for delivery at the end of 2011/beginning of 2012. "The company has been engaged in lengthy negotiations to resolve issues relating to one of its contracts," said Paul Derecktor, president.
