Minimizing the Transfer of Invasive Aquatic Species

Shipowners should take action to reduce the impact of invasive aquatic species (IAS) carried by hull biofouling. The UK P&I Club has published its top tips on how to reduce biofouling on board vessels to achieve greater efficiency and reduce environmental risk. According to Madlene Wangrau, UK P&I biofouling  is the undeseriable accumulation of various aquatic organisms on submerged structures. “Biofouling is undesirable accumulation of various aquatic organisms (microorganisms, plants, algae and animals) on submerged structures like ships’ hulls. This process can lead to the introduction of invasive aquatic species (IAS) into new environments.

Hai Cheung to Build SeaCure BWMS in China

Evoqua Water Technologies has initiated the second phase of its partnership with Chinese marine equipment supplier Hai Cheung Trading Co. Ltd. Marking another development to the partnership agreement between Evoqua Water Technologies and Chinese marine equipment supplier Hai Cheung Trading Co. Ltd. signed in February, and which initially covered the sale and supply of Evoqua’s SeaCURE System into the Chinese market, Hong-Kong based Hai Cheung will now manufacture and distribute the ballast water management solution under license in China.

Marine Piping: It's Not Rocket Science

Anything but unconventional, Viega piping products and systems provide uncommon time savings and safer repairs, leading to a better bottom line. The maritime industry, over time, has been unusually resistant to change in many aspects of how it operates. Arguably, the ‘biggest’ advances on the water spanning a five decade period leading up to the beginning of the new millennium could be measured in terms of deadweight tonnage and/or the length of a particular class of hulls. Nowhere is that reality more evident than in the shipyard, and looking at what equipment and hardware is used to build and repair marine vessels – now and in the past. Marine piping systems are a perfect example.

SeaCURE Gains Korean Exposure

Evoqua Water Technologies’ partnership with Krosys was strengthened with the unveiling of a SeaCURE Ballast Water Treatment System during the Kormarine 2017 exhibition in Busan, South Korea. The electrochlorination unit (ECU) skid showcases the Korean engineering company’s competence in building, installing and commissioning Evoqua’s high-end ballast water treatment technology in the Korean newbuild and retrofit markets. The development represents another success for both companies…

Siemens Provides Hypochlorination Systems for LNG Ships

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has awarded Siemens Water Technologies an order for 14 Electrocatalytic Chloropac sodium hypochlorite generating systems. SHI, in turn, will install the systems on separate liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers for three petrochemical companies. The Chloropac systems from Siemens will help prevent marine growth in the main components of the LNG carriers’ seawater cooling systems, including sea chests, piping, coolers, and heat exchangers. The first system was delivered to SHI in May, with subsequent deliveries scheduled throughout 2007 and 2008.
