Long Beach Terminals Remain Open

Marine terminals at at the United States’ second-busiest seaport have remained open and operating amid the unfolding coronavirus crisis, with regular vessel calls and scheduled work shifts continuing, the Port of Long Beach said.The port said its marine terminals are receiving vessel calls and workers are transferring cargo off and on ships under the health-protective directives established by the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection, with guidance from the U.S.

Ferry Capability is More Than Managing an Asset

Ferry operations are extremely complex with a combination of inputs that will all impact the ferry’s ability to deliver effective operational capability – the asset itself forms only a small part of a system for transporting people and vehicles between two points. All inputs to the ferry transportation system need to be considered to deliver the system’s capability and ensure the service is successful. Too much emphasis is often placed on the acquisition of a ferry, rather than on the remaining operational inputs, resulting in an ineffective, inefficient and unsuccessful operation.

MISC Hands Over Naval Auxiliary Vessel BM5 To RMN

MISC Berhad (MISC) today had successfully handed over to the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) the Naval Auxiliary Vessel BUNGA MAS LIMA (BM5), joining the RMN’s current fleet that will be deployed to safeguard the safety of our Malaysian waters and strengthen the RMN’s future maritime defense strategy. Dryad: Asian Piracy on the Rise

Dryad Maritime gives warning of increasing SE Asia piracy. The warning results from the release of their Q2 figures, containing data that shows the area experiences the highest number of maritime crime incidents in 2014 in comparison with other traditional piracy hot spots. The warning comes in the wake of the most recent hijack of a tanker, (MT Moresby 9), off the Anambas Islands on July 4. Pirates boarded the vessel, taking the crew hostage before stealing part of the 2,200-metric-ton cargo of Marine Gas Oil (MGO). The vessel location is still unknown.

Maritime Piracy Infesting SE Asia Waters: Dryad Maritime

Dryad Maritime informs it is warning of an increasing threat from Southeast Asia piracy following the release of their Q2 figures which show that the area continues to experience the highest number of maritime crime incidents in 2014 when compared to other traditional piracy hot spots. The warning comes in the wake of the most recent hijack of a tanker, (MT Moresby 9), off the Anambas Islands on 4th July, 2014, when pirates boarded the vessel taking the crew hostage before stealing part of the 2200 tonne cargo of Marine Gas Oil (MGO). The location of the vessel is still unknown. This year alone has seen 12 reported cases of vessels being boarded underway and a further 19 reports of robberies…

NY Waterway Ferries Fit Video Surveillance System

The 8 million annual passengers that travel the New York Harbor on NY Waterway ferries now do so more safely with a system that includes hundreds of Interlogix IP and analog cameras, transmitting from moving ferries to a land-based security command center via a fast-roaming wireless mesh network based on multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) by Fluidmesh Networks. NY Waterway is the nation’s largest privately owned commuter ferry company, transporting 30,000 riders a day between 22 landings and terminals along a 100-mile corridor in the Hudson and East rivers and upper New York Harbor.

Diver Threat Detection Sonar Order for DSIT

DSIT Solutions Ltd gets order for its PointShield™ Portable Diver Detection Sonar (PDDS) system. The PointShield™ PDDS is specifically designed to provide underwater protection for navy ships, private yachts and commercial vessels. Hollings Secures $29.5 Million for Port

U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings announced today that he has secured a total of $29.5 million for port security efforts at the Port of Charleston as part of the fiscal year 2004 Omnibus Appropriations bill. The funding is directed to Charleston's Project Seahawk, the nation's first port security command and control center and a project Hollings helped create. The Omnibus spending measure, approved by the Senate Thursday, encompasses the 7 appropriations bills that have yet to be approved individually. The bill will now be sent to the president for his signature. "This Congress and this Administration have failed to provide the funding necessary to secure our ports, and I will not let their lack of foresight threaten security at our Port of Charleston," said Sen.

Port of Corpus Christi Receives Security Grant

The Port of Corpus Christi received notification of a $2.27 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Congress provided funding for the grant program to the newly created Transportation Security Administration (TSA), now responsible for security. Port Commission Chairman Ruben Bonilla said, “The Port of Corpus Christi applauds Congress’ recognition of seaport security issues. Seaports are a vital asset to the U.S. economy. “ The funds awarded today will be used for security enhancements for the Southside and Northside of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, known as the Inner Harbor. The Inner Harbor, is one of the port’s most vital economic engines with approximately seven of the port’s major industries,” said Bonilla.

Port of South Louisiana Dedicates New Vessel

The Port of South Louisiana dedicated its newest security vessel, the PSL Responder, among hundreds of public officials, business representatives, and other guests at Globalplex Intermodal Terminal on the Mississippi River on August 15. The ship is the third security vessel in the Port’s fleet to patrol the Mississippi River and provide security in its 54-mile port district.

Canada Invests in Security Projects

One hundred and fifteen projects aimed at enhancing security at Canadian ports and domestic ferry services will receive funding under the Marine Security Contribution Program. This announcement was made today by the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. This round of funding will provide up to $12.5 million to 22 ports and domestic ferry services across the country. The funds will be used for security enhancements such as surveillance equipment, dockside and perimeter security, command, control and communications equipment, and training. Canada Invests $42m for Marine Security Projects

Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, announced that 386 projects aimed at enhancing security at Canadian ports and marine facilities will receive funding under the Marine Security Contribution Program, and that Transport Canada is now accepting applications under the program’s next round of funding. This round of funding will provide up to $42 million to 101 ports and marine facilities across the country. The funds will be used for security enhancements such as surveillance equipment, dockside and perimeter security, command, control and communications equipment, and training. The five-year, $115-million program is helping Canada’s ports and marine facilities to modernize and strengthen their security systems and programs…

Senate Approves FY 2006 Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Bill

The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) praised the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee for approving the FY 2006 Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill, which would result in a major boost in security funding for America’s seaports. As part of the bill, the committee approved an amendment, offered by Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV), which would provide an additional $648 million in resources for radiation portal monitors, container inspections, port inspections and port facility security grants. “Securing America’s seaports, which are essential for the nation’s economic growth, vitality and way of life, must be a top national priority,” said AAPA President/CEO Kurt Nagle.
