Babcock Sells Frigate Design Licence to Indonesia

Aerospace, defense and security company Babcock said it has secured the first export contract for its Arrowhead 140 (AH140) frigate through a design license agreement with PT PAL Indonesia (Persero), a state-owned enterprise that builds and maintains ships for military and commercial use from its facilities in Surabaya, Indonesia. VARD Offshore Patrol Vessel Design Gets ABS AiP

ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to VARD Marine for its 115-meter offshore patrol vessel (NGOPV) design.The VARD 7 115 NGOPV caters to a range of mission requirements, including air, surface, and sub-surface surveillance and engagement capabilities. PDVSA Readies Armada of Fuel Imports

About a dozen tankers are sailing to Venezuela or waiting offshore to discharge cargoes after state-run oil company PDVSA ramped up tenders to buy gasoline and other fuels to offset its weak refining output, according to traders and Thomson Reuters data. Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) recently awarded BP , Castleton Commodities, Rosneft and CT Energia contracts to buy more than 15 cargoes of gasoline blend stock, diesel, vacuum gasoil, catalytic naphtha and cutter stock for delivery from April through May. The total volume expected for the coming weeks surpasses 4 million barrels, according to traders and tender documents circulated by PDVSA. Venezuela can produce up to 1.3 million barrels per day (bpd) of fuels at its refineries.

NSSLGlobal Trials Wi-Fi with British Royal Navy

Satellite communications provider NSSLGlobal announced the trial of its Wi-Fi service across selected British Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships. The service, based on NSSLGlobal’s proven technology for the commercial shipping sector, but modified for the Royal Navy will, for the first time allow crew to use their personal devices to connect with friends and family through internet services and applications. The Wi-Fi service is an all-in-one access control facility deployed as a gateway for managing Wi-Fi hotspots to enable BYOD (Bring your own Device) to be rolled out to Naval vessels. It will provide the user with a secure, available, supported and legally and morally compliant internet service providing access over existing ship bearers (whether satellite, ADSL or 3G/4G).

Port of Long Beach Awarded FEMA Security Grants

The Port of Long Beach’s Security Division has been awarded $3.4 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grants to fund ongoing projects that protect the port. The grants will enhance port security systems such as physical security equipment and monitoring and detection systems, including the Virtual Port System, and improve the resiliency of port security systems, the port said. “Protecting workers and the community, as well as ensuring business continuity, are top priorities at the Port of Long Beach,” said Lori Ann Guzmán, President of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners. Norsafe set a new world record June 25, 2015, when the 70 passenger GES50 MKIII was dropped from 40 meters with 10 persons on board. There has never before been a staffed lifeboat dropped from this height. GOST System Tracks Stolen Boat in Abacos

GOST (Global Ocean Security Technologies), celebrating its 10th year as a world leader in marine security, tracking, monitoring and video surveillance systems, announced today the successful recovery of a stolen vessel in the Bahamas. On April 10, 2015, a 32-foot Contender equipped with the GOST NT-Evolution 2.0 security tracking system was stolen out of the Abaco area of the Bahamas. The system immediately sent out a Geofence Breach track, sending position reports from the boat. Unfortunately the system that triggers the siren and strobe was disarmed as the boat was in the process of being serviced. The GOST system tracked the vessel to a nearby island where it was ditched due to mechanical failure on one of the 350 Yamaha engines.

Ship Ready to Destroy Syria's Chemical Arms at Sea

Experts on board a cargo ship transformed into a multimillion dollar chemical weapons destroyer said on Thursday they were ready to start working on Syria's stock of toxic arms in the middle of the Mediterranean as early as May. Now they just have to hope the weather holds and Damascus delivers on time. Former container vessel Cape Ray, docked in southern Spain, has been fitted out with at least $10 million of gear to let it take on about 560 metric tonnes of Syria's most dangerous chemical agents and sail them out to sea, said officials.

MTU Diesel Gensets for Type 26 British Combat Ship

Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH and Rolls-Royce have jointly been awarded the contract to design the diesel generator sets for the Royal Navy´s future Type 26 Global Combat Ship. BAE Systems made the announcement at the International Defense and Security Equipment exhibition (DSEi) in London. The propulsion system will consist of a combination of four MTU diesel gensets powered by Type 20V 4000 M53B engines, and a Rolls-Royce Type MT30 gas turbine. Combined propulsion systems utilizing diesel engines and gas turbines are increasingly gaining in significance in the naval sector. The future Type 26 Global Combat Ship will employ a CODLOG (Combined Diesel Electric or Gas Turbine) configuration.

The latest surveillance, defence and security equipment is presented by the 60 exhibitors at MS&D 2009, the international conference and exhibition on Maritime Security & Defence (MS&D), to be held at the Hamburg Fair site from 30 September to 2 October 2009. Norway: Teekay Seeks to Grow Suezmax Fleet

Expanding the Suezmax fleet and greater involvement in carrying oil products are among the ambitions being pursued by theTeekay Tanker Services (TTS) business unit of Teekay. "At the same time, we're working to expand our strong Aframax position," said TTS Vice President Peder Farmen, who heads the product transport sector of TTS from the group's Norwegian office in Stavanger. Teekay's conventional shipping operations in Norway have further diversified the company's fleet, the majority of which is comprised of Aframax vessels. Since Teekay's acquisitions of Bona Shipholding in 1999, Ugland Nordic Shipping in 2001 and Navion in 2002, Teekay has established itself as a leading tanker operator in the North Sea and Atlantic, in addition to the Pacific.

Training: Maritime Security Professional Training

Port facilities and Shipping companies are rushing to comply with new international and national maritime security requirements. The ISPS (International Ship and Port Security) and the U.S. maritime security requirements mandate security assessments, plans and training of security personnel. The Maritime Institute of Technology (MITAGS) and its satellite school, the Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI) offer training for port facility, shipping company and ship security officers. MITAGS/PMI is now offering training for Maritime Security Professionals.The ISPS Code, the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) of 2002 and in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) mandate training for port facility personnel with specific security duties.

Port Authority Commission Delivers Security Equipment

The Port of Houston Authority (PHA) commission approved several recommendations involving contract awards, bids and proposals, professional services and general administrative and operational matters during its meeting on Monday, January 26. Chairman Jim Edmonds presided over the public meeting. The commission approved recommendations to issue purchase orders to Motorola, Inc., Dictaphone Corporation, and SBC, respectively, for radio system equipment, voice recorder equipment, and telephone lines that will be installed in the PHA's Emergency Command Center. The combined total amount of the purchase orders is not expected to exceed $385,000.

Port of New Bedford Awaits Security Equipment

With nearly $2m in federal port security funding awarded to New Bedford, Mass., Port officials are expected to purchase a range of security equipment . The Port of New Bedford won two grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Port Security Grant Program. The first grant of $918,256 was awarded in 2007, and the second one of $948,177 was awarded in spring 2008. Neither grant has been released to the city due to a post-award review process related to environmental and historical preservation compliance guidelines, according to FEMA officials and Kristin Decas, executive director of the New Bedford Harbor Development Commission (HDC).
