ClassNK Unveils Software Security Guidelines

Classification society ClassNK has released its Guidelines for Software Security which target software developers, system integrators and more.As part of its Cyber Security Series, ClassNK regularly releases guidelines and standards that outline cyber security measures based on the recently-released ClassNK Cyber Security Approach outlining the group’s basic approach to ensuring onboard cyber security for ships.The new guidelines, released as the third and latest part of the series, aim to assist with risk management focused on software used on board vessels.

How are we to implement an effective Maritime Security Program? When terrorists hijacked aircraft and used them as weapons, a significant paradigm shift occurred in how we view security in the U.S. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was created and we were witnesses to the largest shift in federal government roles and responsibilities since World War II. ABS Council Supports Maritime Security Initiative

Strong support for a proposed comprehensive series of maritime security initiatives was expressed by the ABS Council at its semi-annual meeting in New York on November 12, following detailed presentations on the subject by ABS executives. The 60-strong Council is drawn from the more than 800 members of the classification society to provide guidance to the Chairman and management of the society. It includes prominent members of the shipowning, insurance and regulatory sectors. "New demands will be placed on classification societies when the proposed IMO International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) comes into effect," said ABS Chairman and CEO Frank J. Iarossi after the meeting.
