DOT Announces $703M in Port Funding; 41 Projects in 22 States

U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced more than $703 million to fund 41 projects in 22 states and one territory that designed to help improve port facilities through the Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program. Following is the full list of FY 2022 Port Infrastructure Development Grant Awards:ALASKANorth Extension Stabilization Step 1 Project ($68,700,000), Anchorage, AlaskaThe Project will reconfigure and realign the shoreline within the “North Extension” (the area north of the existing general cargo terminals) at the Port of Alaska in Anchorage, Alaska.

Consortium to Assess Containership Fire Safety for EMSA

Bureau Veritas (BV) has delivered an approval in principle (AIP) for BV’s ‘Cyber Managed Prepared’ notation to Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (KSOE) for its vessel design.The maritime industry is growing ever more connected, with the majority of newbuild vessels today being built with integrated digital systems on board. While this increased digitalization enables ship owners and managers to collect data and exchange information with their vessels, it also leaves ships vulnerable to cyber risks, BV said.

Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd (SHI) received an Approval in Principle (AiP) for an LNG carrier design under Bureau Veritas’ (BV) Cyber Managed Prepared notation. The certificate was delivered to the Hyun Joe Kim, Vice President of SHI, by Christophe Capitant, Chief Country Executive of BV Korea, at a ceremony on SHI R&D Center in Daejeon, Republic of Korea.SHI has received the AiP for its SVESSEL smart ship solution, which focuses on complete digitalization of the ship and its applications.

KR, Samsung Heavy Industries to Maritime Study Cyber Security

Korean Register (KR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to conduct a joint study on “Ship Cyber Security Network Construction and Design Safety Evaluation” at the Marine Engineering Research Center of SHI.Under the MOU, the two organizations have agreed to evaluate the construction and design safety of cyber security networks applicable to new ships. DNV GL Awards AIP for SHI Cyber Secure Notation

The international accredited registrar and classification society DNV GL has presented South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (SHI) with an Approval in Principle (AIP) for the Cyber Secure (Advanced+) notation.According to DNV GL, this is the world’s first AIP for its Advanced+ addition to the Cyber Secure notation. The additional scope has been awarded as a result of the use of the Samsung Smart Ship Solution, SVESSEL.Cyber security is becoming a crucial part of design and operational ship safety. Its importance is certain to grow as connected systems onboard continue to proliferate as the industry moves toward smarter and autonomous vessels.

Port of Hamburg Delegation in China

A delegation from Hamburg was in China from 14 to 18 May, visiting companies in Zhengzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou. Organized by Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) in cooperation with the Hamburg Representative Office in Shanghai, the delegation’s tour was led by Axel Mattern, HHM’s Joint CEO, and Mathias Schulz, its Head of Market Development Asia. The delegation included representatives of TCO Transcargo, Rostock Port, Trelleborgs Hamn, Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and Hamburg Invest. The focus was on discussions with leading import and export companies, along with Chinese logistics providers for sea and rail services. In addition, the delegation was extremely impressed by developments on the expansion of Chinese infrastructure.

Cyber Security Tests Performed on Zim Genova

Naval Dome said it has completed the pilot testing of its multi-layered cyber security system for Lloyd’s Register aboard XT Shipping’s Zim Genova. The 4,300 TEU containership was operational during the tests, which were supervised by the classification society and bridge systems provider Totem Plus. The pilot tests, carried out as part of the classification society’s initiative to develop cyber security guidelines, and the first of their kind on a vessel in transit, evaluated the Naval Dome system’s ability to defend ships against a variety of cyber-attacks.

Keeping a Watchful Eye

Mariners and ship owner/operators experienced a 26% spike in maritime piracy and armed robbery since 2014  and the North Sea Oil Industry admitted that it had been targeted and thwarted cyber attacks, attacks that if successful could have caused untold financial and logistical damage. •    Within the last decade, plans to attack a cruise ship in a major U.S. port were revealed. Maritime surveillance systems play a key role monitoring sea lanes and ports while supporting worldwide maritime safety and security. The ability to operate effectively and securely in any environment (air, land or sea) depends on an acute awareness and understanding of the surrounding elements.

Fire onboard a boat or ship is generally considered the most dangerous situation on the water. While advances in technology have helped to mitigate risk, consistently investing to upgrade a crew’s firefighting training, skills and equipment is the best means to keep crew, ship and cargo safe if disaster strikes. While innovative new fire-resistant materials and advanced fire suppression equipment onboard ships and boats has helped to improve fire security, technology alone is not a one-stop security blanket in the quest to keep crew and ship free from harm in the case of a fire.

Maritime security technology company, Sonardyne International Ltd, has demonstrated the capabilities of its Navigation and Obstacle Avoidance Sonar, NOAS, during three days of water borne demonstrations in Plymouth, south-west England. More than 25 equipment specifiers, owners’ representatives and vessel operators from the European superyacht industry, commercial shipping and naval community attended the event in late November to witness first-hand the capabilities of NOAS as an important new aid to vessel navigation and underwater obstacle avoidance.
