UK: Royal Navy to Get Uncrewed Minesweeping System
Uncrewed minesweeping systems, designed by Atlas Elektronik, will detect and destroy sea mines on naval operations for the UK Royal Navy, thanks to a £25 million contract announced Tuesday.The Combined Influence Minesweeping (SWEEP) system will be the Royal Navy’s first uncrewed minesweeper.More than 25 jobs will be supported through the contract to deliver SWEEP at the Dorset-based company, plus 48 more jobs in the supply chain, the UK Government said in a statement.The system will allow personnel to neutralize mines from a remote and safe distance at sea while on operations worldwide…
Electronic Inclinometer for Tugboat Safety
Danish marine safety equipment manufacturer, Daniamant, has launched a tugboat version of its renowned Electronic Inclinometer, an advanced heel and pitch measuring device. The DanEI-300T fulfils the most recent Bureau Veritas Group’s regulations for escort tugboats and is approved by German BSH to the IMO (International Maritime Organization) performance standard MSC.363(92):2013. Bureau Veritas’ classification rules in the January 2019 edition stipulate that escort tugboats must be equipped with a calibrated heeling angle measurement system, otherwise referred to as an inclinometer.
Offspring Launches Oiltech Surge Protector
Mooring and offloading systems supplier, Offspring International, has announced a rapid response, surge protection system for terminal loading hoses. Called Oiltech Surge Protector, the hose monitoring system offers a smarter and more sensitive way of detecting hose overpressure during tanker loading. If a pressure surge is detected, pumping operations are automatically shutdown. According to the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (2013), the highest incidence of tanker related oil spills is during loading operations.
FESCO Transports 2014 Olympics Equipment
FESCO Logistics, a provider of worldwide logistics services and a division of FESCO North America, delivered a 100-ton roadheader to Novorossiysk, Russia for transshipment to Sochi, Russia for construction of the site of the 2014 winter Olympics. The Alpine Miner ATM 105-IC is a boom-type roadheader of the 100-ton class. The piece of equipment is used for mechanized tunneling in hard and abrasive rock formations. The cargo was loaded onto a MAFI trailer, secured by 15 chain lashings, in Baltimore, Md.

Government Update: Signed Confessions
Many in the maritime industry are beginning to view the oil record book as a signed confession. The number of prosecutions in the United States for fraudulent entries in oil record books is rising exponentially and fines have recently skyrocketed. In the years 1998 through 2001, research has revealed one prosecution in each year for oil record book violations. In 2002, there were seven prosecutions - and four of those were against individual chief engineers. In 2003, nine prosecutions, four of which were again against individual chief engineers. Through the middle of August 2004, there have been seven prosecutions, and only two were directed at individual chief engineers. Criminal fines to date have totaled $52,285,000.
