DNV GL Launches Operations & Analytics Centre in India

Royal IHC wins multiple contracts for Dredgers

In the last two months of 2016, IHC saw a substantial increase in the sale of its vessels, equipment and engineering packages. Almost half of the total order intake over 2016 was secured in this period. “We see market recovery in the dredging and renewables industry, and are positive that this will continue in 2017,” says IHC CEO Dave Vander Heyde. One of the highlights of the year end includes the sale of a trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Easydredge 2700 from stock. Supported by the Argentinean bank BICE, the vessel was sold to Dragados Argentinos DASA S.A. (DASA) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. DASA is a new company, established by three leading dredging contractors in the country.

Wärtsilä, MOL Sign maintenance Deal for Two LNG Carriers

Wärtsilä has signed a ten-year maintenance agreement with MOL LNG Transport Europe Ltd., an affiliate of the Japanese MOL Group. The agreement, which covers two LNG carriers, increases the predictability of the vessels' operations, enhances safety and reduces operational costs. The comprehensive service agreement includes all scheduled engine maintenance activities, workshop services and online remote support. With Wärtsilä's Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) solution, maintenance activities for the two vessels' engines can be planned based on actual engine condition rather than following a strict calendar-based schedule. The CBM solution controls and extends the engine maintenance intervals, reducing operational costs and downtime.

Austal Hosts Naming Ceremony for Oman’s New Naval Vessels

Austal has welcomed the Commander of the Royal Navy of Oman (CRNO), Rear-Admiral (RADM) Abdullah bin Khamis bin Abdullah Al Raisi to the company’s Australian shipyard in Henderson, Western Australia, to officially name two 72 meter High Speed Support Vessels (HSSVs) designed and built by Austal for the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO). In a formal ceremony, RADM Abdullah bin Khamis bin Abdullah Al Raisi named the ships RNOV AL MUBSHIR (S11) and RNOV AL NAASIR (S12). Hamburg Gives Cruise Ships Easier Access

The Nautical Terminal Coordination (NTC) has expanded its portfolio to include cruise ships, now providing support for Costa and AIDA vessels when they call at the Port of Hamburg. When it arrives in Hamburg for the first time on February 27, 2016, AIDAmar will be the first cruise ship to call in Hamburg under the supervision of NTC, working in cooperation with Carnival Maritime’s fleet operations center. The cruise ship business is booming in Hamburg, with 160 visits expected in 2016.

Available: 300 Free Systems; Wanted: 300 Ships

Which will be the first 300 ships in the world to test and validate Sea Traffic Management (STM) with updated systems free-of-charge? As the shipping domain is takes steps in information technology, the STM Validation Project aims to demonstrate the STM concept in large-scale test beds in both the Nordic and Mediterranean Seas, encompassing around 300 vessels, 10 ports and five shore based service centres as well as using the European Maritime Simulator Network. The predecessor project, MONALISA 2.0, defined a need for validating STM in ports and on board ships supported by service centers on shore. 300 “STM-Systems” will be installed on board ships, developed and installed by ECDIS-manufacturers free-of-charge, and start running live in 2017.

Damen Builds RoPax Ferry for Canada

The Damen 80-meter ice class RoPax ferry MV Veteran handover to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador (GNL) took place in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada on October 23, 2015. Launched earlier this year by Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania on March 27, the vessel will start services from Fogo Island and Change Islands before the end of November. MV Veteran was delivered from the shipyard on time and within budget. MV Veteran is the first of a two-vessel contract, with a design stemming from a Canadian-Danish partnership between Fleetway and Knud E. Hansen.

Singapore is a growing maritime hub, which has hundreds of shipmanagers with approximately 1,500 DNV GL classed vessels managed from Singapore. Efficient Coordination of Mega-ship Calls at Hamburg Port

The number of ultra large vessels calling at the Port of Hamburg has been on the increase for years. This is resulting in some major challenges for the port operators, shipping companies and authorities. With the introduction of the Nautical Terminal Coordination (NTK), there is now a body to handle the centralised operational coordination of mega-ship calls for the first time – long before a vessel proceeds up the estuary of the river Elbe. Tata Steel is crowning glory of HMS Queen Elizabeth

Today’s naming ceremony of the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth marks a major milestone in Tata Steel’s 12-year involvement in the project. In that time the company has supplied 40,000 tonnes of steel and developed three entirely new grades of lighter and stronger steel specifically for the future flagship of the Royal Navy. Tata Steel will also supply steel for the second carrier, HMS Prince of Wales. The naming ceremony will come five years after the first steel was manufactured at Tata Steel’s UK plants for HMS Queen Elizabeth and 33 months after the first section of the 280 metre-long vessel entered the dry dock at Rosyth, Scotland to commence construction.

New Fixed Pitch Propeller Design from Wärtsilä

Wärtsilä introduced the FPP Opti Design, a new fixed pitch propeller (FPP) design concept. According to Wärtsilä, the new design offers fuel savings of up to 4 percent and highly reliable full scale performance predictions. The concept has been developed utilizing the latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. The Wärtsilä FPP Opti Design has been developed at the company’s Technology and Service Centre in the Netherlands, and is the result of highly experienced design engineers having access to the very latest and most sophisticated software and analysis tools. CFD calculations analyze not only the propeller performance but most importantly also, the interaction between the propeller and hull.

Peel Ports Signs £100M Contract For Cranes For New Liverpool Terminal

Peel Ports Group has signed a multi-million pound deal with Shanghai-based Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. (ZPMC) for 17 ‘mega cranes’ for its new £300m Liverpool2 container port. ZPMC will initially supply five ship-to-shore (STS) megamax quay cranes and 12 cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes (CRMGs) in phase 1 of the project and a further 3 three STS cranes and 10 CMRGs in phase 2.The contract is a major step forward in the construction of what will be one of Europe’s most advanced container facilities, scheduled to open at the end of 2015. The combined handling capacity of the five ‘megamax’ STS cranes and 12 CRMGs will dramatically increase the port’s productivity and efficiency, delivering major benefits and cost-savings for customers using the Port of Liverpool as their UK gateway.

ASRY Expands Technical Cooperation With SOLAS

ASRY (Arabian Shipbuilding & Repair Yard) says it is expanding its already extensive range of in-yard services in Bahrain by signing an important Service Agreement with Solas Marine Services Group. The Agreement will allow Solas to build a 2,000-square-metre Service Centre for Life Boats, Life Rafts and Fire Fighting & Life Saving Appliances in ASRY. This is the first development in an initiative to increase ASRY’s technical resources, which will continue to roll out in 2014.

Survitec Liferafts Earn RRR Approval

The inland waterways of Russia can now benefit form a new standard of safety equipment following the approval granted to the Survitec Group’s Survitec Zodiac brand by the Russian River Register (RRR). The approval was granted after inspectors from the Register completed a detailed study of the liferafts, escape slides and rescue boats manufactured by Survitec Group under the Survitec Zodiac brand. This included verifying their reliability, manufacturing processes and quality control methods employed at the company’s facility in Chevanceaux, France.
