Offshore Energy: Are Decommissioning Costs set to Spiral?

Supply chain innovation: Allseas’ Pioneering Spirit is currently having its 20,000-tonne capacity jacket lifting system installed. Load tests took place in late January. The first commercial project is due in April. The jacket lift system means that no barges are needed. Kirby Acquires Targa's Inland Tank Barge Fleet

Kirby Corporation has announced the signing of an agreement to acquire Targa Resources Corp’s inland marine tank barge business for approximately $69.3 million in cash. The purchase will be financed through additional borrowings. Targa’s inland marine tank barge fleet consists of 16 pressure barges that have a total capacity of approximately 258,000 barrels, many of which are under long-term multi-year contracts. The closing of the acquisition is expected to occur near the end of the second quarter and is subject to customary closing conditions. From Fire to Emissions, Ferry Debates Heat Up

Firefighting led a stream of topical debate at trade association Interferry’s 40th annual conference in Copenhagen last week – but not before a record 342 delegates came under fire from a leading Green politician claiming that ‘shipping is currently one of the unaddressed areas of air pollution’. Michael Cramer, German chair of the European Parliament’s transport and tourism committee, delivered a stinging opening address demanding that the ferry and shipping sectors become more environmentally sustainable. He said ‘most vessels are like hazardous waste incinerators because they burn heavy fuel oil which should be processed as highly toxic waste but is usually exhaled without sufficient filtering’.

Cameroon Awards Kribi Deepwater Contract

Cameroon has awarded a contract for its Kribi port to a consortium led by French logistics group Necotrans, the two parties said. The deepwater port will allow for the import and export of raw materials such as timber and cotton as well as vehicles and service equipment for Cameroon's oil and gas sector. A contract for the Kribi container port was awarded to a Bollore-led consortium last week. The government is rushing to get Kribi operational to ease congestion on the port of Douala, 150 kilometres to the north. "As the only deepwater port in Central Africa, Kribi will be the economic lifeblood for Cameroon and the region, notably Chad and the Central African Republic," Necotrans President Gregory Querel said in a statement.

Kirby Announce Record Earnings in Q1 2014

US tank barge operator and diesel engine service providers, Kirby Corporation, inform that earnings for the first quarter ending March 31, 2014 amounted to $62.2 million, or $1.09 per share, compared with $56.6 million, or $1.00 per share, for the 2013 first quarter. Consolidated revenues for the 2014 first quarter were $589.2 million compared with $558.8 million reported for the 2013 first quarter. Kirby's 2014 first quarter results included a $0.03 per share severance charge and an estimated $0.03 per share combined impact from delays related to winter weather and the costs associated with a collision of a Kirby vessel in the Houston Ship Channel.

Kirby to Order New Articulated Tank Barge, Tugboat, Pair

Kirby Corporation says it is to construct an articulated 185,000 barrel tank barge and 10,000 horsepower tugboat unit (ATB unit) at a cost of $75 to $80 million for charter to a customer when completed. Kirby Corporation completes the acquisition of Penn Maritime Inc. & Maritime Investments LLC, US operators of tank barges and tugboats. NAVFAC Southeast Awards Contract for Littoral Warfare Systems Facility

Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded a $12.5 million contract on April 28 to Harry Pepper & Associates, Inc. of Jacksonville, Fla. for the design and construction of a Littoral Warfare Systems Facility at Naval Support Activity Panama City, Fla. The Littoral Warfare Systems Facility will be a center of excellence for research, development and integration of existing and future adaptive force packages. These modular and deployable packages will provide warfighting capability to nontraditional and unconventional maritime platforms within Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Panama City Division's global maritime partnerships.
