Royston Expands UK Engineering Facilities

Royston Diesel Power has doubled the size of its UK engineering facilities to support continuing global growth in its marine engine service business and new technology development. As part of a £500,000 ($676,000) investment program the company has opened an additional 15,000 sq. ft. of engineering workshop premises alongside its existing headquarters on the banks of the River Tyne. As well as increasing the company’s engine repair and maintenance capability, the new center will also provide a focus for a range of other technical support functions.

Kongsberg Technology Chosen for New Ice Class Cruise Ship

Kongsberg Maritime technology has been chosen for installation aboard Australian cruise line Scenic Cruises’ new ice class cruise ship. The 228-passenger, 168 meter long Scenic Eclipse features an ice strengthened hull, but with sleek lines, state-of-the art technology and luxury fittings, it takes its design cues from the exclusive world of billionaire’s megayachts. Scenic Eclipse is currently under construction at Uljanik Shipyard in Croatia, with delivery expected during 2018.

Rolls-Royce, Astican Open Las Palmas Workshop

Rolls-Royce yesterday opened a new, custom built, 2,100-square-meter service facility at the Astican Shipyard in Las Palmas, on Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. The center is a partnership between Rolls-Royce and the shipyard. Las Palmas’ position in the Atlantic allows Rolls-Royce and Astican to enhance their support to rig and drillship owners undertaking ongoing exploration, production and development operations in Europe, Africa and the Americas, Rolls-Royce said, adding the center will also service future growth in the offshore supply and service market as well as the fisheries sector.

Hoover Container Solutions Opens Facility in Brazil

Hoover Container Solutions, a global provider of chemical tanks, cargo carrying units and related products and services, opened its new service facility in Brazil. The wash line facility allows Hoover to provide expanded cleaning services while handling all intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), ISO tanks and offshore equipment destined for oil and gas platforms, mining sites, islands and supply bases in the region, Hoover said. Hoover’s new facility is equipped with experienced staff licensed to clean a wide variety of hazardous and nonhazardous materials.

Rolls-Royce Expands in the Canary Islands

Rolls-Royce announced it has signed a cooperation agreement with the Astican Shipyard in Las Palmas, Canary Islands that it said will enhance the service capabilities of both parties to meet growing demand from rig and drillship owners. A new 1,980m2 service facility will be built by Astican for Rolls-Royce to service and overhaul the complete Rolls-Royce product range, including the simultaneous reconditioning of up to six Azimuth thruster units. Coupled with Astican’s ship repair facilities, the new custom-built service center at the crossroads of the Atlantic, linking Europe, Africa and the Americas, will allow Rolls-Royce to better serve operators with ongoing exploration, production development operations in these regions, the company said.

ABB Turbocharging announced today it will celebrate the opening of a new service facility in Fredericia, Denmark on June 12, 2014. The ceremony will also mark the completion of the amalgamation of its activities in Norway, Denmark and Sweden into a single Local Business Unit (LBU). “With TURBOCHARGING SCANDINAVIA we merge three rather small units in Norway, Sweden and Denmark into a common, more powerful organization served by a well-integrated team with focus on customer needs across entire Scandinavia,” said LBU Manager, Joachim Bremer. Mack Boring Opens New Sales and Service Facility

Diesel engine distributor Mack Boring & Parts Co. celebrated the opening of their New Bedford, Mass. facility with a two-day open house. The event was capped with a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce. As home to the largest commercial fishing fleet on the east coast and convenient to a large number of industrial and recreational marine dealers, the New Bedford location will enable Mack Boring to better serve dealers, boat owners and OEM customers. Until the move to New Bedford, the firm served the region from facilities in Middleborough, Mass.

Great Lakes Shipyard Commissions New Cutting Machine

Great Lakes Shipyard announced the installation of a new state-of-the-art plasma cutting machine, the Plate Pro Extreme 3100. The addition of this cutting table expands the range of services available to its customers and improves the efficiency of Great Lakes Shipyard operations, while also enhancing the quality and precision of the work being produced. Bringing this capability in-house allows the Shipyard to make more of its own parts without relying on outside vendors or subcontractors.

Rolls-Royce Opens New Marice Service Facility

Rolls-Royce, a global power systems company, has opened a new Marine Service facility in Guangzhou, to better serve its growing customer base in southern China. Rolls-Royce is expanding its marine services network in China to deal with increased customer demand. The new facility in Guangzhou joins those already in operation in Hong Kong, Dalian and Shanghai. The newly opened facility, located in proximity to Guangzhou’s busy commercial port and ship repair yards, includes a maintenance workshop and offices for a small team of service engineers and customer support personnel. MHI to Acquire Pratt & Whitney Power Systems

Small and Medium-size Gas Turbine Business Unit of P&W -- Agreement Signed with United Technologies, U.S. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has concluded an agreement with United Technologies Corporation (UTC) of the U.S. under which MHI will acquire Pratt & Whitney Power Systems (PWPS), the small and medium-size gas turbine business unit of Pratt & Whitney (P&W), an aeroengine manufacturer. Earlier this week, MHI and UTC, P&W's parent company, signed the agreement. PWPS engages primarily in the engineering, assembly and sales of aero-derivative gas turbines and also provides services of gas turbines and engineering, procurement and construction of related power generation systems. Westport Shipyard on the Future of Government Craft

Westport Shipyard of Westport, Wash. recently launched its Global Response Cutter (GRC-43) prototype, constructed of a composite material the company believes to be the future of boat building. The launching of the 143-ft vessel also marks the yard’s return to commercial boat building. Westport Shipyard began in 1964, building commercial fishing vessels for the Northwest fleet and the occasional pleasure boat. In the early 90s Westport built the high-speed ferries for the Catalina service, but shortly afterward the company segued over to serving the yachting industry exclusively.

Technology Associates, Inc (TAI) a New Orleans based Naval Architecture firm which also has an office in India has unveiled its Technology EnviroMax 300 OSV. Utilizing a unique Designer/Builder relationship, this design was developed in conjunction with Thoma‐Sea Shipyards. The design already has up to six vessels under construction at Thoma‐Sea Shipyards’ facilities in Lockport, Laa. Thoma‐ Sea Shipyards acquired this facility from Halter Marine in 2002 and has been using it to build OSV’s up to 270ft.

Kongsberg Opens New Mexican Service Hub

Kongsberg Maritime Mexico S.A. DE C.V., became fully operational out of its new facility in the city of Veracruz this summer. As an extension to Kongsberg Maritime’s worldwide service network, the new service hub will offer service and support to DP vessels and merchant ships with Kongsberg Maritime navigation, automation and control systems on board. Kongsberg Maritime Mexico was formally established in January 2011. Kongsberg Maritime New Orleans supported the planning and setup for its operational start this summer. The operation in Mexico currently has five employees, including three field engineers, who will continue to work closely with Kongsberg Maritime’s established service team in New Orleans.

ABB Turbocharger Service Facility for Dubai

ABB Turbocharging to open a dedicated service point in the Drydocks World facility in Dubai. This new cooperative agreement was marked formally by signing a Memorandum of Understanding at a ceremony in conjunction with the SMM in Hamburg, Germany. The agreement ensure quick turbocharger service to customers in the yard, and offer one-stop ABB turbocharger solutions at Drydocks World. According to the agreement, ABB Turbocharging in Dubai will provide international factory warranties to all service jobs done at Drydocks World, including dedicated machines and engineers at a workstation within the shipyard facility. Over 100 ABB Service Stations worldwide will also provide assistance to Drydocks World if required…
