Damen Takes Second in Maritime & Aviation Sector in MT500 Rankings

Damen Shipyards Group has achieved second place in the maritime & aviation sector in this year’s MT500 rankings of the top 500 companies and institutions in the Netherlands. It also came twentieth out of 500 in the overall ranking, its best ever result.In the ratings breakdown, Damen achieved the full five stars for product leadership and employment practises. The winner in the maritime & aviation category was national airline KLM, with the Port of Rotterdam coming third.The MT500 is the result of an annual survey of business decision makers that asks them to assess and rank companies in the same and related sectors as their own businesses on product leadership, customer focus and excellent execution.

BIMCO Unveils New Contract Editing Solution

BIMCO has launched SmartCon, a new solution for editing contracts that is designed to make contractual work easier and more secure. “SmartCon is a brand-new approach to contract editing, we believe that it will significantly ease the work life of our current users and will attract new users to BIMCO’s contract universe,” said Grant Hunter, Head of Contracts and Clauses at BIMCO. The $100m Port Security Grant Scramble

About $100 million will be available to various port authorities, facility operators and state and local government agencies who have developed an Area Maritime Security Plan as part of the 2015 FEMA port security grant program. Eligibility Criteria is established pursuant to the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002, as amended (MTSA) wherein Department of Homeland Security (DHS) established a risk-based grant program to support maritime security risk management. This year funding is directed towards the implementation of AMSPs and Facility Security Plans (FSP) among port authorities, facility operators, and state and local government agencies that are required to provide port security services. The application submission deadline is May 19, 2015 at 11:59 PM EDT.

South Africa V.V. Trade - SAECS Service Enhancement

To meet changing requirements in the trade between Europe and South Africa, both for dry and reefer cargo, and improve the quality of the service product offered, the SAECS Member Lines - DAL, Maersk, MOL and Safmarine - announced the merging of the current SAECS service with the MedShuttle/225 service. The joint service will operate with larger sized vessels and the weekly named day frequency will continue to be maintained by eight vessels with the transit times between North Europe and South Africa largely unchanged. In northern Europe and South Africa the port rotations will remain unchanged but will be supplemented by calls at Algeciras on both the southbound and northbound voyages improving transit times from Mediterranean to South Africa v.v.

G6 Alliance Announces Port Rotations

After agreeing to expand the successful G6 Alliance to the transpacific trade earlier this year, the six member lines announced the port rotations of their new comprehensive and competitive service portfolio. New Caterpillar Rig Pressure Pump Engine

Caterpillar's new 16-cylinder, 78 liter engine will be revealed for the first time at the 2013 CIPPE Show in Beijing. Manufactured in Lafayette, Indiana, the new Cat 3516C (HD) engine builds on the established track record of the 3512C (HD) engine, which has logged millions of hours in oilfields around the globe, including in China. The engine will be available in three ratings: 2,461 bkW (3,300 bhp), 2,349 bkW (3150 bhp) and 2,237 bkW (3000 bhp) @ 1900 rpm. The engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 2 Emissions for North America as well as  Tier 1 Emissions for international markets.

Austal Delivers Fast Ferry for Mineworker Commuters

The SMM exhibition in Hamburg has once again proven that it is the cradle of marine technology and the grand-daddy of all marine exhibitions. On display in 12 separate halls were more than 1,300 exhibitors from more than 50 countries, launching new products and discussing business with an estimated 37,000 visitors. More telling that sheer numbers, in this case, is the feeling of the exhibition and the ubiquitous marine technology theme. The quality of attendee and exhibitor is always high, but this edition of the bi-annual exhibition seemed especially charged due to the many positives currently running throughout the full spectrum of the maritime market.

Carriers Confirm Plans

Six container shipping lines in the Europe-Australasia-North America trade have finalized plans to introduce a new and improved liner service system for their existing operations on the world's longest trade-route. The new system will see five existing services replaced by two fixed-day weekly contra-rotating round-the-world operations. Marfret and P&ONedlloyd. All six carriers will continue to compete with each other and market their services independently.
