Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) said it is actively strengthening partnership in key areas of enhancing maritime transport safety. In 2014, meetings of four sections of the RS Scientific and Technical Council (STC) were held. Scientific and educational centers, shipbuilding and shiprepair yards, shipping companies and other organizations of the maritime industry participated in the RS Scientific and Technical Council sections: St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University, Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping, St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University (SMTU), Krylov State Scientific Center, OAO Rosmorport, OAO Severnaya Verf, OAO Admiralteiskie Verfi, Nevsky Shipyard, Shipbuilding & Shiprepair Technology Center.

Severnaya Verf shipyard won the governmental contract in the Russian Defense Ministry's online open auction for three ARC4 ice-class seagoing supply vessels. The auction was held by the Federal Agency for Military Procurements Rosoboronpostavka. Once the contract is signed, Severnaya Verf will start metalworking for the first supply ship no later than in Dec 2012. The shipyard will deliver the first vessel in Nov 2014, the second one – in Nov 2015, and the third one – in Nov 2016. Through recent years, the shipyard has exported two offshore drilling platform replenishment ships.

The launching ceremony of corvette Stoiky was held at JSC Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg. The ceremony was attended by Baltic Fleet (BF) Deputy Commander Rear Admiral Sergei Farkov. Corvette Stoiky is the third multirole littoral zone ship built in series of Project 20380 (lead ship is corvette Stereguschiy). Such ships are designed for antiship/antisubmarine/antiaircraft warfare and gunfire support of landing operations. To lower radar signature, stealth technology was applied in the project design.

Russia’s Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg has signed a contract on the overhaul of two warships for the Algerian navy, the company’s press service said on Thursday. The Russian shipbuilder will modernize a Nanuchka II class corvette and a Koni II class frigate, which have been in service with the Algerian navy since the 1980s. “The contract has been signed in the framework of an agreement between [Russian state-run arms exporter] Rosoboronexport and the Algerian Defense Ministry,” the company said in a statement.

Tuesday 19 October 2010 will become historically significant and memorable day for Russia and the United Kingdom. The grand opening of new Russian masts on the legendary HMS Belfast will take place in London. The restoration project of masts began in April 2009 at Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg. Russian veterans of the Arctic convoys from Arkhangelsk, Yuri Kopytov and Georgi Evtukov, with support from Petropavlovsk Group and VTB Capital, will arrive in London to attend the official ceremony. Masts restoration project was supported by Russian companies United Industrial Corporation, Severstal and Sovkomflot, in recognition of the heroism of the Arctic Convoys 1941-1945.

After modernizing by Severnaya Verf shipyard, a part of United Industrial Corporation, a large ship Vice-Admiral Kulakov goes back to Northern Fleet. The first ship was modernized at OPK’s shipyards and in the middle of April it’s going to be tested for further activity in Northern Fleet. To improve conditions of life, it was necessary to change some armament complexes and life-support system. In 1990s the ship was planned to utilize because of the lack of money. However at the beginning of this century RF Ministry of Defense had sufficiently money to repair and modernize the ship. In 1980s most of such ships were added to USSR armory. Nowadays RF Navy stocks seven ships and one more ship “Admiral Chabanenko” is getting to modernize.

Severnaya Verf shipyard, a part of United Industrial Corporation (OPK), launched the first serial corvette Soobrazitelniy. The project of this corvette was designed by Almaz, central design bureau (St.Petersburg). The corvettes intend for functioning in the nearest sea area and fighting with surfaces ships and submarines and also for military operations. On September 8, 2009, Severnaya Verf shipyard, a part of United Industrial Corporation (OPK), launched a vessel for oil-rig platform provision, also known as the project VS 485 PSV. The vessel for oil-rig platform provision is equipped with special capacities and cargo system for transportation of oil-rig mortar, friable freights, methanol and general freights on the open deck. Also, the vessel is equipped for the participation in rescuing, evacuation and fire fighting missions around the oil-producing platforms in the North Atlantic. Norway Company Solvik Hull Supplies AS is the customer of this vessel, and the designer Norway Company Vik-Sandvik AS.

Ahn, Executive vice-president of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) signed a cooperation agreement in the field of shipbuilding. The main purpose of this agreement is to establish a cooperation which will include the mutual developing of shipbuilding projects, equipments and the designing of vessels. According to this agreement Hyundai Heavy Industries, as a partner of OPK, will provide a support in the construction of new shipbuilding facilities, shipyard management and in the building of specific types of vessels, including gas-locomotives.

Shipbuilding in St. Petersburg, according to the St. Petersburg Times, is shrinking. In the past, the city’s three largest shipyards - Admiralteyskiye Verfi, Baltiysky Zavod and Severnaya Verf - were overloaded with state orders for submarines and ships, tankers and ice-beakers. But today, many shipbuilding engineers and workers are facing a different circumstance. State orders are no longer able to support the industry. Instead, more successful are those who export their frigates and submarines to India and China. These days any land in St. Petertsburg, but especially along the coast, is in high demand. Shipyards are attracting property developers rather than researchers and developers.

According to a report on RIA Novosti, Russian shipbuilding is undergoing a round of consolidation, and the aim apparently could be a shipbuilding giant, this following the sale of a significant share packet, a popular business daily, Biznes, reported. Biznes wrote that the IST Group's sale of 88.2% of the Baltiisky Zavod shipyard to the United Industrial Corporation meant a merger between Baltiisky Zavod and rival Severnaya Verf could happen in the long term. One source in reported that the deal was political, to complete a military order for two destroyers for China. The Federal Industry Agency called the deal an important stage in creating a single integrated organization in military shipbuilding.
