Master Convicted Over Passenger Death

The master of a Sydney Harbor passenger vessel has pleaded guilty and been convicted of one count of unreasonably placing the safety of another person at risk in the Downing Centre Local Court on Monday, 22 February 2021.On behalf of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions laid charges against Paul Arthur Titze, master of the Lady Rose, for failing to comply with his general safety duties under the Marine Safety (Domestic Commercial Vessel) National Law Act 2012.AMSA investigated the operation of the vessel following an incident in February 2019 involving a 39-year-old woman who was found dead in a bathroom on Lady Rose during a cruise.

Sydney Ferry Fatality Raises Best Practice Issue

The importance of maintaining chemical toilets onboard ship has been raised following an incident in February onboard a Sydney Harbor-operating passenger ferry in which a high level of toxic gas was detected in a toilet cubicle after a passenger was fatally injured.A 39-year-old passenger was found unconscious in a toilet cubicle aboard the Lady Rose and could not be revived by paramedics. MSC (Europe) Limited Awarded Conversion M.V Africa Mercy

Southhampton-based marine outfitting company MSC (Europe) Limited has signed a letter of intent that will lead to a thirteen million pound conversion contract to transform the EX Dronning Ingrid into a state of the art hospital vessel for Mercy Ships. MSC (Europe) Ltd., one of Maritime Services Corporation’s eleven offices worldwide, secured the contract amid strong competition by being able to deliver a complete turnkey package for the owners within the projected eighteen month period. The works comprise of the following: interior and structural design; engine, steel and tank works; electrical generation and distribution; air conditioning and sprinkler systems; fresh water and sewage systems; cabins and public rooms; and hospital areas. The works will take place at the Ex.

CSO Seawell Docks at A&P Southampton

A&P Southampton recently welcomed a slightly unusual vessel to their dry-dock. The ship repair, maintenance and conversion company, whose customers mainly consist of Cruise, Ferry, and Trading Vessels have successfully completed a refit of Coflexip Stena Offshore’s CSO Seawell, an offshore support vessel at their King George V dry-dock. The ‘Seawell’ is a highly technical vessel accommodating three moonpools, two diving bells, divers decompression chambers, hyperbaric lifeboats and has a derrick with active heave capability and is normally employed doing well intervention in the North Sea. The Seawell arrived in Southampton during March for a dry dock and repair period lasting just over 5 weeks and involved various routine repairs including steelwork…

NACE Announces Corrosion Impact Study

A two-year, $1 million grant was awarded to Ohio-based CC Technologies Laboratories - with support from NACE International, The Corrosion Society - to estimate the total cost of metallic corrosion in the U.S., and to provide cost-effective strategies to minimize its impact. The study is funded through the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21), administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Economic sectors to be studied include transportation infrastructure such as airports, bridges, underground oil and gas pipelines, and water and sewage systems. The study will also investigate modes of conveyance and storage, such as aircraft, motor vehicles, ships, storage tanks and trains.

Kaparis Defines Safety on Cruise Ships

Kaparis met recently with MR/EN to discuss what he considers are the most important safety issues in cruise shipping today. By Regina P. Among the sketches of general arrangement drawings, and IMO and technical specifications, Celebrity's Demetrios Kaparis sums up his vision for a safe cruise ship fleet. Kaparis has expressed that mandatory safety training for all officers and crew with firefighting and medical responsibilities must be also be reinforced. He feels that these individuals must be certified in these areas according to IMO recommendations and flag administrations and he will strive to ensure that special training rooms and facilities will be available onboard all Celebrity newbuilds - steadfast in his quest for eternal vigilance.

Cougar Ace Salvage Nearly Completed

The Unified Command issued a situation report stating that the Cougar Ace is now stable. The ship’s emergency generator is on line and plans call for the service generator to be brought back on line when the salvor releases the ship back to the owner. Most decks suffered some vehicle damage and the vehicles must be re-secured. Currently, the water and sewage systems, fire main, and low pressure CO2 systems are inoperable. Source: HK Law

Ferry Manager Sentenced for Sewage Cumping

The U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut stated that the operations manager of the Fisher Island Ferry was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment, one year of supervised release, and a $10,000 fine for violation of federal law. The manager pled guilty to directing the ferry crews to open the overboard discharge valves on the vessels’ sewage systems during the period 2000 through 2004, thereby allowing raw sewage and untreated sludge to be discharged directly into the Thames River in New London and into Long Island Sound. The practice continued until the U.S. Coast Guard did an unannounced inspection of a ferry in 2004. Source: HK Law
