ACO Marine has welcomed the findings reported in the Friends of the Earth 2016 Cruise Ship Report Card, the annual survey of cruise shipping’s impact on the environment, which highlights a growing need for the sector to update its sewage treatment technology. The annual FOE survey, published in June, documented the environmental footprint of 17 cruise lines and 171 cruise ships, finding that a significant proportion of vessels continue to operate out-dated sewage treatment plant. The FOE found that 40% of cruiseships continue to use 35-year-old technology, calling for an urgent upgrade to systems capable of preventing environmental damage from the discharge of poorly treated black, grey and galley waste water streams.

"The World", the largest, private, residential ship on the seas, will be retrofitted with a Wärtsilä Advanced Wastewater treatment system and a Wärtsilä Nacos Platinum system for navigation and external communication purposes. The Wärtsilä Advanced Wastewater solution will replace an existing system and keep the vessel in full compliance with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) requirements concerning the prevention of pollution from ships. The ship is owned by its residents and is managed by ROW Management Ltd based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in November. The equipment is scheduled for delivery in April, 2016.

AER Supply, an international distributor of marine products, is featuring a cost-effective MEPC-compliant onboard sewage treatment system for the U.S. commercial marine market at the 2013 WorkBoat Show. AER was named earlier this year as the distributor for Severn Trent De Nora marine wastewater disinfection systems for the Gulf Coast and other regions of the United States. The Severn Trent De Nora MARINER OMNIPURE Series 55 marine sewage treatment systems are designed specifically to provide cost-effective treatment of gray and black water on small vessels, workboats and yachts. They use proprietary electrolytic disinfection technology that eliminates purchasing, storage and handling of hazardous chemicals normally required with other treatment technologies. They are approved by the U.S.

Hamworthy KSE has received its first order in the commercial sector for its new MBR (membrane bioreactor) system for black/grey water treatment. Radisson Seven Seas is the first cruise company to confirm an order for the advanced sewage treatment system. Under a contract worth $1million, the MBR system was installed aboard the 28 500 tonne Seven Seas Navigator, which had been converted to the new sewage treatment technology while in drydock at the Mariotti yard in Italy. The configuration for the Seven Seas Navigator is designed for a ship’s complement of 845, each of its two MBR systems comprising ten membrane modules and ultimately sharing the load equally.
