The Korean Government is to develop the largest maritime engineering aquarium in the world for deep-sea research purposes, such as simulation experiments for the construction of maritime plants. The joint investment of public and private sector plans to build the marine engineering aquarium by 2016, which will create the perfect deep-sea environment for core designing technology research. Willard Marine, a 56-year-old builder of composite and aluminum boats, today announced the appointment of Ning Wang as director of operations and program management. Wang will be responsible for overseeing Willard Marine’s planning, purchasing, stockroom and IT operations. He will be based in the company’s corporate offices in Anaheim, Calif. Wang brings over a decade of management experience in the wireless and technology industries to Willard Marine. He has held senior operations, business development and management positions at AnyDATA Corporation and Transaction Network Services.

The signing ceremony of the Academic License Agreement between SENER Ingeniería y Sistemas S.A. (SIS) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was held on December 4, in the frame of Marintec 2013 international exhibition held at the Shanghai New International Exhibition Center. By virtue of the agreement, SJTU is granted the license to use the FORAN System for educational purposes, SENER (Shanghai) Systems Co., Ltd. (SSS) is commissioned to provide training and technical assistance services, and in general new ways of collaboration in research, development and innovation projects are opened.

The new China Maritime Centre will promote, disseminate and study the role of China as a major maritime nation in the 21st century, with the aim of contributing to the understanding of China’s rise as a maritime power. It will provide a focus for research and consultancy into a wide variety of maritime activities in which China is prominently involved. This research and consultancy, embracing both current and historical trends, will promote a deeper understanding of how China’s greatly enlarged role relates to, and is a key component of, the global maritime industry. Benefiting from a strong connection with the maritime industry and academic institutions in China, especially Shanghai Jiao Tong University, there are plans for a range of studies.

International classification society Bureau Veritas has agreed a technical co-operation deal with COPPE/UFRJ, the Ocean Engineering department of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, to set up a joint development centre. The move builds on co-operation agreements with nineteen universities in China, Russia, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, Taiwan and France and is intended to speed the development of tools and technical requirements needed to facilitate Brazil’s expansion into deep offshore oil exploitation. The Hangzhou Dongfeng Shipbuilding yard is busy with multiple projects in their yard. In addition to a series of patrol vessels they are building a number of coastal ships and barges. Established in 1978 the yard covers an area of 70,000 square meters and is fronted by 400 meters of deep-water pier face. Facilities and equipment includes a 140 by 38-meter slipway, a 100-ton crane, plasma numerical controlled cutting machine, submerged arc automatic welding machinery, 160 ton hydraulic pressure and a 20-inch pipe bending machine in addition to plate bending machines. The yard can build vessels up to 20,000 DWT. The shipyard has built a wide range of vessels to class from container and bulk cargo ships to tugs and hovercraft.
