Carbon Capture @ Sea: Evergreen Ship Notches World First

ClassNK has granted its SCCS-Full class notation to Evergreen’s Neopanamax container vessel Ever Top.Short for Shipboard Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage-Full, the SCCS-Full notation signifies that the vessel is now equipped with onboard CO2 capture and storage (CCS) systems.This also marks it as the world's first Neopanamax container vessel to be retrofitted with such systems, according to ClassNK.The CCS systems, designed and developed by Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute…

BV Grants AiP for Bulk Carrier Carbon Capture Project

Bureau Veritas (BV) has delivered an Approval in Principle (AiP) to Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings, a Hong Kong shipowner, for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project onboard two of its vessels.Partnering in the project is Qiyao Environmental Technology, a subsidiary of Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute.The AiP follows a joint study which validated the technical feasibility of using CCS technology on existing vessels. CCS Issues AIP for Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage System

Upgraded Wärtsilä 20 Engine Attracts Multiple Orders

Wärtsilä has received a series of notable orders for the upgraded version of its Wärtsilä 20 engine.A total of 33 engines have been ordered for merchant auxiliary power application in three major shipbuilding projects. The orders, which were booked in June, have been contracted with Wärtsilä Qiyao Diesel Company Ltd (WQDC), the joint venture company of Wärtsilä and Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute (SMDERI).The engines will be installed in 11 new vessels being built in shipyards owned by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC).

ABS, Industry Partners to Advance Autonomous Shipping

ABS joined the Unmanned Cargo Ship Development Alliance to work with industry partners, including class organizations, shipyards, equipment manufacturers and designers to advance autonomous shipping. The design will integrate features of independent decision-making, autonomous navigation, environmental perception and remote control. “Increased digitization, advanced technologies and new levels of connectivity are changing the way the maritime industry operates,” says ABS Greater China Division President Eric Kleess.

Wärtsilä to Divest its Shares in Two-stroke JV

Wärtsilä announced that it will divest its shares in the Qingdao Qiyao Wärtsilä MHI Linshan Marine Diesel Co. Ltd. (QMD), the joint venture company established for manufacturing large low-speed marine diesel engines. Wärtsilä's shares in the joint venture will be transferred to the current majority shareholder, Qingdao Qiyao Linshan Power Development Co. Ltd., a company fully owned by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation. The agreement was signed today in Beijing, China. Wärtsilä said the value of the transaction is not significant, and the deal will have a positive effect on Wärtsilä's continuing operations but the impact is not significant. The closing of the transaction is subject to the required regulatory approvals.

Wärtsilä Offers Two New Auxiliary Engines

Wärtsilä is expanding its engine portfolio with the introduction of two additional auxiliary engines, the Wärtsilä Auxpac 16 and the Wärtsilä Auxpac 32. Both the Auxpac 16 and the Auxpac 32 are pre-engineered gensets with a turbocharged four-stroke engine having direct fuel injection and charge air cooling and provide the electrical power onboard all types and sizes of ships. They are based upon Wärtsilä's four-stroke engine technology, which has been proven with more than 1,000 Auxpac 20 and 26 engines in operation having in excess of 6 million accumulated running hours experience.

Thousand Wärtsilä Auxpac 20 Gensets Produced

The 1000th Wärtsilä Auxpac 20 generating set, an 8-cylinder Wärtsilä Auxpac 20 unit, was produced for Jiangsu Rongsheng Heavy Industries, the largest shipyard in China, at the Wärtsilä Qiyao Diesel Company (WQDC) joint venture facilities in China. The Auxpac 20 is a standardised medium-speed generating set, based on the well-proven Wärtsilä 20 engine. It is widely used in merchant vessels as an auxiliary power provider. It features low operating costs, reliable performance, and easy installation. In his speech made at the celebratory event, Stefan Wiik, Managing Director of WQDC, commented: "With one thousand of these engines having been built, sold, and successfully used around the world, the quality of the Wärtsilä Auxpac 20 unit has been well and truly established.

CIMAC Circle Talks Marine Power in China

CIMAC Circle at Marintec Shanghai

CIMAC, the International Council for Combustion Engines took advantage of this year’ s major trade show in the large engine sector to stage the latest in its CIMAC Circle series of forums for information exchange. Chaired by CIMAC board member Yasuhiro Itoh, Managing Director, Niigata Power Systems Co., Ltd., the Circle was entitled “Life-Cycle Costs - the Impact of Fuel and Emissions,” and with contributions from a full spectrum of stakeholders gave a timely and comprehensive snapshot of present and predicted costs of engine ownership in the light of tightening marine emissions legislation. Especially significant, the CIMAC Circle took place for the third time in China.

Construction work starts on Wärtsilä's China Project

The ground breaking ceremony which officially starts the construction work took place in China on the generating set factory jointly owned by Wärtsilä and Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute, an underlying company of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC). The factory, which got the name Wärtsilä Qiyao Diesel Company Ltd. (Shanghai) will be located in the Shanghai area and will initially manufacture Wärtsilä Auxpac W20 diesel generating sets, which will be sold through Wärtsilä's global sales network. Production will start up in early summer 2006. "Our goal is to boost Wärtsilä's share of the ship genset market. The focus for shipbuilding is firmly in Asia and shipbuilding in China is expanding at an extremely fast rate.
