USCG Rescues 5 Off Oahu
A Coast Guard 45-foot Response Boat-Medium anchored off Laie Point after becoming disabled has been removed and is being towed to Coast Guard Station Honolulu, yesterday. A RB-M boat crew from Station Honolulu removed the disabled RB-M from its anchorage and towed it to the Coast Guard Cutter Ahi. Ahi is currently towing the RB-M to Station Honolulu. A jet ski crew from Marine Corps Base Hawaii Waterfront Operations assisted in the operation. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point is on-scene acting as a safety observer. The RB-M became stranded after attempting to take the 55-foot disabled sailing vessel Doubloon in tow Tuesday morning. The Doubloon drifted into the surf zone and broke apart in the 8-10 foot seas.
USCG Suspends Search for Missing Mariner off Lanai
The Coast Guard suspended the search Monday for a missing mariner after the fishing vessel he was aboard capsized approximately one mile west of Lanai. “Following extensive efforts by sea, air, and land we have decided to suspend the search.” said Capt. Shannon Gilreath, Sector Commander, Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. The Coast Guard conducted an extensive search of the area, conducting 60 sorties, totaling 120 mission hours and covering approximately 4,531 square miles. Involved in the search were an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, the Coast Guard Cutter Kiska, homeported in Hilo, a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Station Maui as well as a Coast Guard Auxiliary airplane and boat.
USCG Establishes Security Zone at Kailua Bay for Presidential Visit
Coast Guard law enforcement officers will enforce a temporary security zone in the waters of Kailua Bay, Oahu. To ensure the safety of the President Obama, the temporary security zone will be in effect from 6 a.m. Friday to 10 p.m. Jan. 5, 2014, unless canceled earlier by the Captain of the Port Honolulu, Capt. Shannon Gilreath. The Coast Guard is coordinating with the Honolulu Police Department, Marine Corps Base Hawaii and other federal, state, and county law enforcement agencies on patrols of the area under the direction of the U.S. Secret Service.
USCG Responds to Honolulu Harbor Molasses Spill
Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received an official request from the Hawaii Department of Health to assist with the response to the molasses spill in Honolulu Harbor Friday. “The Coast Guard is prepared to bring all the requested resources to this incident to support our state and local partner agencies” said Capt. Shannon Gilreath, captain of the port Honolulu. “We have been working closely with state partners since the spill occurred to offer advice and resources. The Coast Guard began supporting the response Monday morning when investigators from Sector Honolulu responded to a report of discolored water in the harbor. Since then, the Coast Guard has held daily meetings with the lead State agency, Hawaii Department of Health.
