Bollinger Delivers USCGC John Patterson to the US Coast Guard
Bollinger Shipyards has delivered the USCGC John Patterson to the U.S. Coast Guard in Key West, Fla. This is the 179th vessel Bollinger has delivered to the U.S. Coast Guard over a 35-year period and the 53rd Fast Response Cutter (FRC) delivered under the current program.The USCGC John Patterson will be the fourth of six FRCs to be homeported in Sector Boston.Each FRC is named for an enlisted Coast Guard hero who distinguished themselves in the line of duty. Mobile Dredging Bags Shark River Contract
The New Jersey Department of Transportation has awarded a $7.6 million contract to dredge the Shark River in Monmouth County after the effects of Superstorm Sandy created a greater need to complete the long-delayed project. Mobile Dredging and Pumping Co. of Chester, Pa. will remove approximately 102,000 cubic yards of sediment comprised of sand and silt to "restore the state channels to allow safe passage for recreational and commercial traffic," according to a state release. Crews will hydraulically dredge the sentiment and pump it through a secure welded pipeline to dewatering locations -- a portion of the Belmar Marina parking lot in Belmar and Seaview Island in Neptune and then truck it to the Monmouth County Reclamation Center for "beneficial use," the release says.
This Day in Coast Guard History – September 7
1934- Surfboats and lifeboats from Coast Guard stations Shark River, Squan Beach, Sandy Hook and others responded to a deadly fire aboard the liner Morro Castle, rescuing 129 survivors. Cutters Tampa and Cahoone also responded. After failing to get the Morro Castle under tow due to the worsening weather, they recovered as many victims from the water as they could. All told over 250 Coast Guardsmen participated in the rescue and recovery effort. Inter-Agency Partners Begin Oil Spill Clean up Efforts
An unidentified source of heavy oil washed up on the shore Tuesday between Shark River Inlet, Monmouth County, and Seaside Heights, Ocean County, prompting the Coast Guard and other federal, state and local officials to begin clean-up efforts. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office/Group Philadelphia along with the Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team, N.J. Department of Environmental protection, Bradley, Neptune, Asbury Park and Avon Offices of Emergency Response, New Jersey State Police, Tri-State Bird Rescue, and numerous other groups are currently responding to the spill that spans the 12-mile stretch of shoreline. The spill was reported Tuesday afternoon by New Jersey State Police.
Coast Guard Contributes Material for Artificial Reef
The Coast Guard, in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), is scheduled to deploy worn buoy sinkers to an artificial reef off the coast of New Jersey on Saturday. The Coast Guard cutter Juniper, a 225-ft. buoy tender homeported in Newport, R.I., will be adding a total of 10 buoy sinkers weighing approximately 16,000 pounds each to the Axel Carlson Reef site located approximately six miles from Shark River Inlet and four miles from Manasquan Inlet. The area of the reef is four square miles and sits at a depth ranging from 66-ft to 80-ft. The concrete sinkers, recently taken out of service by the Coast Guard, will provide a hard substrate for fish, shellfish and crustaceans, fishing grounds for anglers and underwater structures for scuba divers.
