Customs Demands Bigger Bonds as Tariffs Bite

Fishermen Convicted of Improperly Harvesting Seals

Duncan Sharpe of Gander, Kevin Blackler of St. John’s, and Richard Worthman of Heart’s Delight were convicted for improperly harvesting seals in accordance with humane harvesting requirements under the Canadian federal Fisheries Act. Sharpe and Blackler were convicted in Gander Provincial Court on October 21. They have each been fined $1,250 to be paid within six months and forfeited 11 Harp seals. The offences occurred on April 30 in the Twillingate area. Worthman was convicted in Harbor Grace Provincial Court on November 5. He has been fined $1,000 to be paid within six months, and forfeited a clubbing device and seal pelts valued at $154.25.

Diesel-Electric Units Prepared for Navy’s AGOR Project

During most of 2012 Cummins Northwest was busy with the procurement of the various subsystems and assembly of the diesel-electric units for the two Ocean Class Auxiliary General Purpose Oceanographic Research (AGOR) vessels building at Dakota Creek Shipyards. The company delivered the first four-unit ship set in January of this year. Seattle-based Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. has done the design work for the two vessels. Four Cummins QSK38-DM powered electrical generators will provide power for each of these 238 x 50-ft. vessels.

Film Celebrates Golden Age of NW Boats

Motor yacht Kensington on the ways at Jensen Motor Boat Company, circa 1929. For more than a hundred years, the Pacific Northwest has ranked as a center for vessel design, construction and preservation. Beginning with the advent of the Pacific cod fishery in the 1880s, utilizing the raw material afforded by the vast Northwest forests, Seattle-area boat builders began creating one of the world’s great fishing fleets. Soon, they would craft sailing ships to support the lumber and cargo trades, and work boats that sustained Pacific commerce.

The former chief engineer of an American-flagged car-carrier pleaded guilty today to criminal charges related to the deliberate discharge of oil-contaminated bilge waste through a “magic pipe” that bypassed required pollution prevention equipment, announced Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew J. McKeown for the Department of Justice’s Environment and Natural Resources Division and U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein. Frank Coe, the former chief engineer of the M/V Fidelio (renamed the M/V Patriot) pleaded guilty today to conspiracy and violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS) before U.S. District Judge William M. Nickerson. Coe was employed by Pacific Gulf Marine Inc.

McKeown for the Department of Justice's Environment and Natural Resources Division and U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein. Stephen Karas, the former chief engineer of the M/V Tanabata (renamed the M/V Resolve) pleaded guilty today to conspiracy and making false statements before U.S. District Judge William M. Nickerson.

Navy Tug Fights Fire Aboard Freighter in Liberia

USNS Apache (T-ATF 172) responded to a shipboard fire aboard a commercial freighter while repairing the port of Monrovia, Liberia’s, damaged commercial pier and surveying the city’s harbor, Aug. 10. The engine room of Tahoma Reefer, an Estonian commercial freighter also paying a call on Monrovia’s port, burst into flames in the early hours of the day. Later that morning, just as smoke from the burning vessel was spotted from Apache’s bridge, the U.S. Embassy in Liberia phoned the ship and asked the crew to respond. Using the ship’s rigid hull inflatable (RHIB) boat, Apache Chief Mate Troy Bruemmer and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Pete Sharpe, officer-in-charge of the 12-member embarked Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2 and three other crew members, rushed to the scene.

A New Standard of Quiet

Institutions through out North America are paying a lot of attention to the University of Delaware’s new research vessel the Hugh R. Sharpe recently delivered from Dakota Creek Industries of Anacortes Washington. The vessel is fitted with retractable transducer pod, articulating stern gantry, wet lab, dry lab, forward gear deployment boom and CTD handling system. It incorporates in one vessel many of the most sought after features found on scientific research vessels around the world. But it is the propulsion system that is setting the new standard in American research vessels. The 146x32-foot (44.5x9.75-meter) diesel electric vessel is powered by four Cummins KTA19 -D(M1)-powered electric generators.
