Panama Canal Opens 2nd Maintenance Congress

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) opens today the Second International Maintenance Congress with the participation of 26 international and six local experts to promote reliability and sustainability in business practices, based on a maintenance culture. “Maintenance has been fundamental for the Canal to operate as it does today, after more than 100 years in operation,” Panama Canal Administrator Jorge L. Quijano said during the opening remarks. The congress is held at the Sheraton Hotel & Convention Center in Panama City. During the three-day event, experts in the engineering and maintenance field will share their knowledge and expertise in maintenance management. The organizers of SHIPPINGInsight 2014 report that the agenda has been finalized and all speaking positions and sponsorships have been 100 percent filled. Now entering its third year, SHIPPINGInsight is a technical and ship operations conference, exhibition and networking event. It will take place Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the Sheraton Hotel in Stamford, Conn. SHIPPINGInsight 2014 will encompass two events: the one-day Marine LNG Symposium Sept. 30, followed by the two-day Fleet Optimization Conference & Exhibition Oct. 1-2. Raymarine Autopilot wins NMEA-BWI Technology Award

Independent panel selects product based on innovation, benefit to boaters, practicality and value. Raymarine took top honors at the 2013 National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) International Marine Electronics Conference & Expo, winning the NMEA-BWI Technology Award for its Evolution Autopilot. The NMEA event, held at the San Diego Sheraton Hotel & Marina September 25-28, was attended by representatives of leading marine electronics manufacturers, dealers, distributors, media, and others from the United States and abroad. Hyproc Shipping Chooses AMOS2

During a formal ceremony held at the local Sheraton Hotel in Oran, Algeria on the 9th of September, Giampiero Soncini and Stefano Succi have signed a contract with Hyproc, a branch of the Algerian oil and gas company Sonatrach, the 12th largest oil and gas company in the world. The project (called HYceo) includes the delivery of AMOS software for the Hyproc fleet of LNG carriers, consultancy and bespoke software development, and an extended personnel training program. The project has to be completed by end 2010. SpecTec Italy has linked with Hyproc's team in Algeria, Ernst&Young in Paris (Hyproc bid consultant), Oracle in Algeria and Veson in the USA on this contract in order to present a coordinated and workable bid. Maersk Alabama Capt. Honored at Annual Dinner

The officers and crew of the Maersk Alabama, who fought off a pirate attack earlier this year, will be represented by Captain Richard Phillips, Chief Engineer; Michael Perry, and Bosun William Rios in accepting an Honored Seafarers plaque at the 40th annual United Seamen's Service (USS) Admiral of the Ocean Sea dinner on November 13, 2009. "We are pleased that all three unions aboard the ship will be represented by the vessel department heads at this signature maritime event," said Edward R. Morgan, USS President. The unions are the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots, Marine Engineers Beneficial Association and the Seafarers International Union of North America.

Crew of 5 American Vessels Honored for Bravery

The officers and crews of five American ships and a seafarer who extinguished a fire on a vessel will be honored for heroism by United Seamen's Service at the 40th annual Admiral of the Ocean Sea dinner on November 13, 2009. The AOTOS honors this year will go to Donald Kurz of Keystone Shipping Co., Ron Widdows of Neptune Orient Lines and the United States Coast Guard, which will receive a special award. The Honored Seafarer awards will go to the officers and crew of the Maersk Alabama, who fought off a pirate attack while maintaining control of the ship 350 miles off the coast of Somalia and whose captain was taken hostage, April 8-13, 2009.
