ClassNK issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) to Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) and Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co. Ltd. for the jointly developed design of an ammonia-fueled Pure Car Carrier (PCC).Ammonia is attracting much attention as a 'fuel of the future' in the maritime sector, expected to be used as decarbonized fuel for ships since it does not emit CO2 when burned. However, ammonia is toxic to humans and corrosive to materials, and the rules on its use as a ship fuel are yet to be developed.

MHI Hybrid Turbochargers Awarded for Efficiency

Hybrid Turbocharger developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME), received the President Award 2015 in the 36th Energy-Efficient Machinery Award from Japan Machinery Federation (JMF). This Hybrid Turbocharger, which incorporates high speed generator motor in Mitsubishi MET Turbocharger, can convert excessive exhaust gas energy of large marine diesel engine into electric power efficiently and flexibly. Furthermore, it can turn into motoring mode so that turbocharger rotor can be accelerated by external electric power. This can supply more air with lower electric power than conventional auxiliary blower makes.

Hybrid Turbocharged Car Carrier Runs Sea Trials

The car carrier that mounts the world first Hybrid Turbocharger with Electric Assist function and Variable Turbine Inlet (VTI) ran its sea trial from April 17-22 and proved the world's first electric-assist turbocharger function on actual ship. The turbocharger was manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME). By using the electric-assist function, the ship will be able to save energy consumption substantially at slow steaming by reducing the amount of time of auxiliary blower operation. The turbocharger combines the function of electric generation as a hybrid turbocharger and that of VTI in addition to the electric assist function. This ship is a car carrier built by Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd.

ClassNK Approves New Super-Efficient Fillet Welding Consumable

Noboru Ueda, Chairman and President of ClassNK announced that it has granted type approval for the new MX-200F welding consumable, developed by Kobe Steel Co., Ltd. (KOBELCO) to greatly improve welding efficiency and coating quality in commercial vessels. Up until now, shipbuilders using conventional fillet welding consumables had to make two welding passes for the required weld leg lengths of around 8mm or above. As the IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR) require the use of 8mm leg lengths in some structural members, this has meant that the relevant welding time for oil tanker and bulk carrier newbuildings has virtually doubled. The IMO Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC)…
