Syscorp Focuses on Domestic Routes

Shin Yang Shipping Corp Bhd (Syscorp) has shifted the focus of its container shipping business to domestic routes in the face of continued volatility in the international container shipping market, reports the Star. The leading Malaysian shipping company has realigned its focus to domestic container shipping routes with some 95% of its 14 container ships deployed on routes within Malaysia, group financial controller Richard Ling said. “A majority of these container ships ply Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia ports,” he told StarBiz. However, domestic container shipping operation remains “very competitive” with reduced demand, Ling said, and this has squeezed the profit margins of shippers.

Cargotec Cement Handling Systems for Malaysian Barges

At the end of January Cargotec received an order for MacGregor cement self-loading/unloading systems to be installed on two 7,000 dwt barges being built by Shin Yang Shipyard in Miri, Malaysia. Delivery to Shin Yang Shipping is scheduled for September 2011 and the barges will trade on Malaysian routes between Kuching and Sibu, and between Kuching and Miri. The cargo owner is CMS Cement Sdn Bhd, a cement manufacturer in Sarawak. The pneumatic systems will have rated capacities of 300 t/h for loading and 250 t/h for unloading.

In spite of the global economic downturn of 2010, builders in Eastern Malaysia such as Shin Yang Shipyard maintained a steady output in 2010. As a member of the Shin Yang Group of Companies, the shipyard has extensive support and in some cases can market to its own sister companies. The anchor handling tug Danem 19 was launched from the Shin Yang Shipyard for the Shin Yang Shipping Corporation as one of several vessels added to the fleet in 2010. At 164 ft by 41 ft the 4400 HP Danum 119 is a handy sized AHT with lots of versatility.

Shin Yang Builds Tanker/Landing Craft

At the end of March Shin Yang Shipping took delivery of an interesting new combination tanker and landing barge. Built at the company’s own yard to a design by Singapore’s Conan Wu and Associates (http://cwa.com.sg/ ). The 78x16-meter craft has a molded depth of 4.8 meters. Forward of the four-level deck house and beneath the ro-ro cargo deck, ten cargo tanks are arranged fore and aft in five port and starboard pairs. The tanks have a total volume of 1994 cubic meters. Named the Danum 23, the vessel’s primary role will be to transport methanol for use in making glue by the parent company, Shin Yang Sdn Bhd.
