Great Lakes Awarded $71.6 Mln in Dredging Work
Dredging services provider Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation announced it has been awarded several dredging contracts worth a combined $71.6 million.The awarded work includes:Caminada Headland Back Barrier Marsh Creation Project (Coastal Protection, Louisiana, $30.1 million)The Caminada Headland Back Barrier Marsh Creation Project entails dredging suitable marsh fill material from designated offshore borrow areas to create an eight mile long stretch of marsh. This project will help reinforce Louisiana’s barrier islands and prevent coastal erosion.
Disabled Fishing Vessel Towed to Montauk
U.S. Coast Guard crewmembers assisted in towing a 58-foot commercial fishing vessel after it became disabled Saturday about 50 nautical miles south of Shinnecock Inlet. Watchstanders at Sector Long Island Sound command center received notification at approximately 7 p.m. Saturday night that the fishing vessel Bookie was disabled and adrift with four mariners aboard. The vessel became disabled due to an engine casualty but still had power via an on-board generator. Commercial Salvage was initially contacted to tow vessel, but was unable to respond that far offshore.
Tug Sinks off Long Island; One Dead, Three Rescued
A tugboat sank off New York's Fire Island on Saturday, and one crew member died and three were pulled from the icy water by the U.S. Coast Guard. The vessel, the Sea Bear, went down off Fire Island as it was returning to New York from the area's Shinnecock Inlet, said Coast Guard duty officer Mark Averill in New Haven, Connecticut. The Sea Bear notified a vessel service it was taking on water, and the Coast Guard dispatched rescue boats and a helicopter, he said. Hindered by heavy fog, the Coast Guard found three crew members in the 37 Fahrenheit water after about 45 minutes of searching. They were wearing protective immersion suits. The body of a fourth crew member, who was not wearing an immersion suit, was pulled from the water, Averill said.
USCG Rescues Three from Burning Boat
The U.S. Coast Guard said it rescued three people from the water after their boat caught fire near Shinnecock, N.Y., Sunday. A good samaritan contacted the communications center at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound reporting a vessel on fire near the Shinnecock Inlet. A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Shinnecock and the South Hampton Bay Constables responded. The fire engulfed the 36-foot cabin cruiser and the three people abandoned the vessel into the water to swim to their deployed life raft.
