Great Lakes Wins Dredging Contract for Port Arthur LNG Project

Houston-based dredging contractor Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation announced it has been awarded a dredging and disposal contract in support of the Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 project.Great Lakes has been contracted by Bechtel Energy, the engineering, construction, and procurement company that’s managing the project in partnership with Sempra Infrastructure. The Port Arthur LNG project is a natural gas liquefaction and export terminal in Southeast Texas with direct access to the Gulf of Mexico.

Video: Ships Collide Head on in the Welland Canal

Canadian officials are investigating a collision between two general cargo vessels in the Welland Canal in southern Ontario.The 138-meter Alanis and the 136-meter Florence Spirit collided Saturday while traveling opposite directions in the ship canal connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The ships are flagged in Antigua Barbuda and Canada repetitively.No injuries or environmental impact have been reported, though videos and photos of the incident shared on social media show both vessels suffered damage as a result the collision.At the time of the incident…

Jan De Nul Starts Dredging for Mauritian Port

Jan De Nul group of the beginning of work on dredging and expansion on an internal ship canal and a turning circle in port of Nouadhibou (Mauritania), one of the largest centers through which iron ore from the country is exported, is told in the group message.With the deepening and widening of the 25-km long entrance channel to the mineral terminal of Port of Nouadhibou, the National Industrial and Mineral Authority of Mauritania (Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière or SNIM) opens the port for vessels with a capacity of up to 250,000 tonnes.One of Jan De Nul’s largest Cutter Suction Dredgers Zheng He arrived in the first week of October on site.

Cammell Laird: Polar Ship Contract to Kick-start Exports

British shipyard and engineering company Cammell Laird said it plans to unleash an “aggressive exports drive” in 2017 after one of its busiest years for commercial marine work, which saw it land the biggest shipbuilding project in the U.K. for a generation. Cammell Laird CEO John Syvret said the winning of the £150 million contract to build the Sir David Attenborough polar research vessel for the U.K. Government “threw open” a new global market to build a range of high value polar vessels from research to cruise ships.

Retired Ferry Gets a New Lease on Life

A 50-year-old retired Washington State passenger ferry will get a refit, and with it another life as a floating entertainment space. Washington State Ferries (WSF) has sold its smallest retired ferry, Hiyu, for $150,000 to Menagerie Inc., who plans to repurpose the vessel as a floating entertainment venue. “We make every effort to keep our retired ferries operational, instead of being sold for scrap,” said WSF Chief of Staff Elizabeth Kosa. Transport Minister Visits Liverpool2 Development

Russia to Build 2 Tankers for Azerbaijan

Russia's Krasnoye Sormovo shipyard, a subsidiary of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, is to sign a contract to build two tankers for Azerbaijan’s Caspian Marine Services Ltd. The two companies have signed a contract for building and delivery of two RST27 tankers. The tankers will be delivered to Azerbaijan in 2016-2017, according to the contract. The RST27 vessels of the Volga-Don Max class meet the dimensions of the Volga-Don Ship Canal and Volga-Baltic Waterway. The tankers are designed for mixed sea/river transportation of crude oil and oil products (two types of cargo), including gasoline, with no flash point. The RST27 project was developed to the class of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping KM Ice1 R2 AUT1-ICS OMBO VCS ECO-S Oil tanker (ESP).

First Saltie of 2016 Due for Port of Duluth-Superior

The first saltie of the 2016 season, the Albanyborg, is underway and expected to sail into the Port of Duluth-Superior this weekend. ETA is approx. 5 p.m. Sunday, April 3. The ship will pass through the Duluth Ship Canal and beneath the Aerial Bridge before making its way to the Clure Public Marine Terminal to dock overnight. The 472-foot Albanyborg, which flies the flag of The Netherlands, will be the first oceangoing vessel to arrive in the Twin Ports this year after transiting the full length of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway system. US Coast Guard to Break Ice in Green Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard is scheduled to commence icebreaking operations Thursday in the waters of Green Bay in Lake Michigan.   The Coast Guard said these operations will likely occur in areas commonly used by recreational users, such as but not limited to, the Fox River, southern Green Bay and the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal.

UK's Peel Ports to Expand Liverpool to Weather Container Slump

Peel Ports, one of Britain's largest port operators, expects to withstand the container shipping slump with a bold project aimed at attracting cargo to Liverpool away from southern gateways, its chief executive said. Campaign to Cut Haulage Miles

Peel Ports announced that it has secured 50 advocates for its Cargo200 initiative and is urging other shippers in the North-west to add their weight to the campaign. Launched in May, Peel Ports called for importers and exporters whose goods began or ended their journey in the north of the UK to switch current delivery of ocean freight from south-east ports to the centrally-located Port of Liverpool. The initiative aims to cut freight mileage by 200 million miles over the next five years. In addition to achieving significant carbon reduction, the company also estimates that the move could save shippers up to £400 per container in transportation costs by delivering to the heartland of the UK.

Engine Refit for Mersey Pilot Boat

Merseyside-based engine specialist James Troop & Co has secured a deal to supply and install two Volvo Penta D9 engines to extend the service life of one of Liverpool’s River Mersey pilot boats. The firm said it was approached by Peel Ports to replace the engines onboard the Fulmar – one of eight Mersey pilot boats. James Troop immediately sent technical manager Alan Railton and engine sales executive Anthony Ward to work with the customer to perform all the necessary onboard checks, measure up and prepare a recommendation.

Barge Captain Gets Prison Time for Fatal Explosion

An Illinois man who was captain of a petroleum barge that exploded in a Chicago canal in 2005, killing a crew member, was sentenced to six months in prison on Friday, prosecutors said. Dennis Egan, 36, of Topeka in central Illinois, and the barge owner, Egan Marine Corp. of Lemont, were each convicted in June 2014 of negligent manslaughter of a seaman and negligently discharging oil into a waterway, according to a statement from prosecutors. The Chicago suburban company was ordered to pay $5.3 million in restitution to the National Pollution Funds Center for the clean-up. Culina Group to Set Base at Peel Group's Port Salford

Food and drink logistics giant, Culina Group, has been announced as the first major tenant at the new National Import Centre being developed by the Peel Group, as part of its multi-million pound Port Salford development (located approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Manchester City Centre in the UK). Culina Group will take occupation of the first warehouse distribution unit to be built on the Port Salford site - the UK’s first tri-modal inland port facility and Distribution Park, accessible by rail, road and short sea-shipping.
