U.S. Navy to update curriculum and training-related programs for surface force operations and combat systems globally. General Dynamics Information Technology, a business unit of General Dynamics, was awarded the Training Services for the Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) contract by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. The single-award contract has a potential value of approximately $244 million for a one-year base period with four option years. General Dynamics will provide training and training-related program support services, from curriculum development to advanced warfare training across the CSCS domain, which includes their 15 learning sites and detachments and International Programs.

The U.S. Navy has awarded a production contract for its Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) Block 1B3 to General Dynamics Mission Systems. General Dynamics will deliver Block 1B3 system upgrades over the next five years. The upgrades will be integrated into new and existing Navy ships providing significantly improved situational awareness of the tactical environment surrounding the ship. General Dynamics has been involved with the SEWIP Block 1 program since 2003 and received a low-rate initial production contracts for the SEWIP Block 1B3 in 2014. Work on the contract will take place in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. SEWIP is comprised of capability improvements divided into production blocks.

The LUPO Class frigate Alimirante Brion (F-22), which is undergoing a modernization for the Venezuelan Armada by Northrop Grumman's Ingalls Operations, Pascagoula, Miss., sails through the Gulf of Mexico during the ship's first sea trial, October 17 to 18, 2001. During the sea trial, various systems were tested including propulsion, electronics and communications. The ship's combat systems will be tested during a second sea trial in November. Ingalls is also performing similar work on a second LUPO Class ship, Marsical Sucre (F-21), which has completed first trials and goes on combat systems trials later this month.

As part of the Naval Sea Systems Command's efforts to become more efficient throughout the organization, the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) are being realigned. This will allow the centers to operate across organizational boundaries and respond more quickly and effectively to the needs of the Fleet. The realignment is the result of NAVSEA's focus to support Sea Power 21 and the Chief of Naval Operations' unique challenge to NAVSEA's leadership to find ways to become more efficient and effective. This new concept of operations for the warfare centers will do that, and it will also improve the credibility and standing of the warfare centers within the Navy and meet Navy cost-savings targets.
