Researchers from the Korea Maritime & Ocean University have developed a new path-tracking technique for maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS).A multi-national team of researchers, led by Assistant Professor Daejeong Kim, has studied the path-following performance of MASS using a free-running computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model combined with the line-of-sight (LOS) guidance system, at low speeds under adverse weather conditions.MASS need to follow a pre-determined path at sea, considering factors such as obstacles, water depth and ship maneuverability.

Australian shipbuilding group Austal will develop a high-speed that runs on hydrogen fuel under a recently signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sweden's Gotlandsbolaget (Gotland Company).A 130-meter-long high-speed catamaran able to operate on hydrogen and other fossil-free fuels, the new vessel Horizon X will be able to run at 35 knots, while transporting 1,650 passengers and up to 450 vehicles.Håkan Johansson, CEO of Gotland, said, ”This is an important step in our climate journey.

French firm GTT has developed a versatile LNG feeder & bunker vessel concept for worldwide operation without the use of ballast water.Every day, many ships carry on board a considerable quantity of seawater as ballast over the oceans. Technically, this is needed in empty or partially loaded conditions, in order to maintain seaworthiness, reach sufficient draft for propeller immersion, and avoid excessive bow slamming.Such ballasting requires investment for the onboard systems and leads to substantial operating costs.

China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) subsidiary Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. Ltd (SWS) has started hull construction for the first cruise ship that it is building for CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Limited, joint venture between Carnival Corporation and CSSC.The new vessel, scheduled for delivery in 2023, will accommodate about 4,250 passengers, in addition to 1,400 crew members. Japanese shipping company Nissen Kaiun has ordered ten Handysize bulkers from compatriot shipbuilder Tsuneishi Group.Though official sources maintained that Tsuneishi Shipbuilding receives order for several units from a shipowner in Japan for the newly developed 42,000-metric-ton log and bulk carrier TESS42 without revealing the name and numbers, some media-outlets report that the order was for ten bulkers and name of the buyer is Nissen Kaiun.According to Asiasis, the contract has a total value of about $250 million. Four winning school classes attended  the prizegiving of the ‘design your ship for the future’ competition at MARIN (Netherlands Maritime Research Institute). The technology group Wärtsilä is to supply and configure the software solutions for a new, state-of-the-art, purpose built simulation center being constructed near Portsmouth, England. The center is an expansion of the Maritime Skills Academy’s (MSA) training portfolio serving the Solent region, and is designed to meet the specific simulation training requirements of cruise, ferry and superyacht clients.
