111 years of success by designWhen Georg Abeking and Henry Rasmussen from Denmark established their boat and yacht yard 111 years ago, it is likely that neither of them suspected at that time that their small shipyard, headquartered in Lemwerder next to Bremen, would one day evolve into a world-renowned company known for building first class vessels.Today the company, which has been transferred into a European Company (Societas Europaea, SE), is a company that designs and manufactures, among other things. Germanischer Lloyd Opens Testing Laboratory

The examination of metallic materials and failure analysis for the sectors of ship operation systems, civil engineering, plant technology and machinery will now also be offered in Hamburg by GLP, the testing laboratory of Germanischer Lloyd. To complement the branches in Mülheim, Herne and Stuttgart, the operating area of materials testing and failure analysis is being expanded into the North German region. The service spectrum of routine materials testing includes destructive and non-destructive tests, metallography, corrosion examinations, chemical analyses as well as investigations employing light-optical and scanning electron microscopy.

Industry Challenges Underscore Seatrade Convention’s Importance

The 2002 Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention and trade show will be held on March 11-15 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Miami, Fla. It will provide cruise lines and suppliers a venue to exchange ideas on marketing and management, as well as the latest advances in ship operation, technology, and vessel design. In the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the cruise industry is facing its most serious challenges in a decade.
