Ocean Infinity, a marine robotics and deep-sea data acquisition company, has tapped DNV for its ShipManager fleet management software for 17 new robotic ships and additional autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Ocean Infinity, which last year launched a program to build a fleet of unmanned surface robots - the Armada - will implement ShipManager’s modules for planned maintenance, procurement, and business intelligence for its advanced fleet of uncrewed, low-emission vessels for capturing ocean data.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard has commenced production on the third vessel in the ten-ship product tanker build program initiated in April 2005. Steel cutting for the ship, the seventh built by the yard since its opening nearly six years ago, was performed on one of the yard's two state-of-the-art plasma cutting machines. The third tanker vessel is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2007. The first steel plates cut for the ship will be used in construction of the engine room of the 46,000 deadweight ton (dwt) product tanker. Upon completion, the tankers will be owned by American Shipping Corporation, a subsidiary of Aker American Shipping, and bareboat chartered to Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc (OSG).

The National Shipbuilding Research Program Advanced Shipbuilding Enterprise (NSRP ASE) announced last month the selection of four new research projects as part of the Navy/Industry co-funded portfolio of 33 projects. The four new projects are valued at $10.3M, including industry cost share. Project: A Lean Enterprise Model for U.S. Participants: Atlantic Marine Holding Co., Todd Pacific Shipyards, Bath Iron Works, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and five others. Funding: 3.8M NSRP ASE, $3.8M industry cost share. Description: The principal objective of this project is to complete a comprehensive model for the application of lean manufacturing concepts to multiple market segments of the U.S. shipbuilding and repair industry.
