Spanish shipbuilding and ship repair company Zamakona Yards reached a new milestone with the launching of the first of two new 69-meter reefer vessels to be built for the Greenlandic shipowner Royal Arctic Line A/S. Launching will take place February 4.The vessel will be named as Siuana Arctica and will replace the existing vessel Pajuttaat built in 1979. Conceptual design is being carried out by the Norwegian company Havyard Design & Solutions.The ship is designed to operate in northwest Greenland and have greater capacity than current ship. Canada’s shipbuilding and ship repair company Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan), joined by representatives from industry and government,  celebrated the start of construction on the first Joint Support Ship (JSS) for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). The steel cutting ceremony held at Vancouver Shipyards is a significant milestone for Seaspan, the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) and Canada’s shipbuilding industry. With the start of construction on JSS, Seaspan is leading the way in rebuilding Canada’s shipbuilding industry. Aaron W. Hendry, husband, father and grandfather, as well as Florida business leader, died today at the age of 80. Aaron passed away peacefully in his home after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Vard Holdings Limited, a designer and builder of offshore and specialized vessels, announced that its subsidiary Vard Marine has secured a new contract for the design of one Antarctic icebreaking vessel for the Chilean Navy. The contract value is approximately €4 million. Vard Marine, a consulting naval architecture and marine engineering company, has been awarded the contract by ASMAR Shipbuilding & Ship Repair Company to design an Antarctic icebreaking vessel for the Chilean Navy. A delay in private repairs to the hospital ship Africa Mercy has caused a two-and-a-half week adjustment of timelines for Transnet National Ports Authority’s R30 million repair project at the Prince Edward Graving Dry Dock in Durban. Ship repair company A&P Falmouth, located in the south-west of England has won a major contract for repair and drydock modification work to the historic steamship 'SS Shieldhall', which is normally based in Southampton. SS Shieldhall is the largest steamship of her type in Europe, and is included in the National Historic Fleet, having been built and launched on the Clyde in 1955, to a classic pre-WW2 design. The vessel had a long and successful first career with Glasgow Corporation – year round, carrying treated sludge out to sea and, in the summer, taking passengers on pleasure trips.

Following a back-to-basics approach in performing ship repairs, Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) returned another amphibious-class ship to the fleet within budget and ahead of schedule, as the result of a public-private ship repair partnership in the Hampton Roads area. The shipyard completed a planned maintenance availability (PMA) for the Wasp-class, amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) ten days ahead of schedule and within fixed price budget, according to Project Superintendent Bobby Watkins. "Our back-to-basics approach paid great dividends in making this PMA an overwhelming success," Watkins said. Transaction expands company’s capabilities in ship repair market. General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) today completed its acquisition of Metro Machine Corp., a leading East Coast surface-ship repair company that supports the U.S. Navy fleet in Norfolk, Va. The value of the cash transaction has not been disclosed. Metro Machine Corp. now becomes part of the shipbuilding and repair operations of San Diego-based General Dynamics NASSCO, a leading provider of ships to the Navy, a major producer of commercial vessels and the largest shipbuilding and repair company on the West Coast. “The addition of Metro Machine enhances our ability to compete in the growing naval ship repair market,” said Fred Harris, president, General Dynamics NASSCO.

According to a March 12 report from Inquirer.net, about 400 workers of a ship repair company in Lapu-Lapu City are in danger of losing their jobs as the management decides to focus resources on shipbuilding. According to Inquirer.net, Keppel Cebu Shipyard Inc. president David Loh said in a memorandum to the workers that the company has to reduce its workforce due to continuing market decline.
