Carnival Maritime Partners with Wessels Reederei for LNG Training

AIDAnova is due to usher in a new era at the end of the year when it becomes the first cruise ship that can run on environmentally-friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG). To fully prepare the captains and officers for this technological changeover, a series of practical training sessions at sea started in June. The basis of this training project is a new cooperation between Carnival Maritime and Wessels Reederei, which is providing the LNG-powered container ship WES Amelie for training purposes.The 30-day on-board training sessions on the WES Amelie enable AIDA’s captains and officers to experience at first hand what it is like to control a LNG-powered vessel under real operating conditions.

Course Analyzes Ship Structure Fatigue and Fracture

A three-day course hosted by ABS in partnership with BMT Fleet Technology will help participants learn how design, maintenance and operational issues affect fatigue and fracture of steel and aluminum ship structures. Geared to the needs of naval architects, ship superintendents and engineers responsible for design, material specification, welding, operational safety and maintenance, the course includes practical design and analysis theory applications using direct calculations and sample FlawCheck software.

BMT Delivers Port Engineer Training

BMT Designers & Planners, Inc. (BMT), an operating company of BMT Group Ltd, has delivered its training program to assist Port Engineers (PEs) with maximizing investments in the repair and sustainment of their maritime assets. With the complex management of ship repair constantly changing, PEs are tasked with understanding many challenging requirements. These include surface preparation and preservation, drydock evolutions and safety, propulsion system alignment, welding processes and procedures, nondestructive testing, inspections, general shipyard safety and more.

Water Mist Systems – Inspection and Verification

Within the last year, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) has issued several port state control (PSC) detentions due to inoperative water mist systems on vessels trading to the US. In nearly every case, the water supply valve was found to be in the closed position during the PSC examination, essentially making the water mist system “not readily available for immediate use.” In many of the cases, the Chief Engineer was not aware that the water supply valve was in the closed position and was left in the closed position during maintenance.
