Attracting More People of Color to the Maritime Workforce

In the United States, marine transportation is responsible for $361 billion, or 1.7% of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Marine transportation, a key part of global logistics and responsible for 40% of international trade, goods and services, is the backbone of U.S. trade. In the U.S. in 2021 alone, ships have transported more than 1.5 billion tons of cargo valued at more than $1.5 trillion; in that same time period, U.S. ports have facilitated approximately 450,000 ships, which is more than 10% of the global amount (McLean, 2021).

Internet of Ships Open Platform Establishes Testbed

A testbed was established for an Internet of Ships Open Platform (IoS-OP), and for the test NYK provided a next-generation onboard IoT platform that the company has been developing with MTI Co. Ltd., an NYK Group company, and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT).The NYK Group will proactively make use of the IoS-OP to improve safety and reduce environmental loads, and thus create an innovative, new business model.The IoS-OP consortium was launched in June 2018 by ShipDC, a ship data center established by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK) aimed at establishing an open and common platform to share data collected from vessel operation throughout the entire maritime industry.NYK joined as core member of the consortium…

Northrop Grumman New Shipboard System

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has unveiled a new marine alarm, monitoring and control solutions. The new series of shipboard machinery automation solutions, marketed by Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit under the VisionMaster label, is being introduced to provide cost-effective scalable solutions for small- to medium-size commercial and naval vessels. The hardware is type approved to meet the requirements of major classification societies for unmanned machinery space operation. Offered in two basic configurations – VisionMaster Alarm Management System (AMS) and VisionMaster Machinery Control System (MCS) – the new Sperry Marine solutions use commercial-off-the-shelf industry-standard components for all key building blocks within the system.

CAE Wins Navy, Commercial Contracts

CAE's marine controls division has won contracts worth around C$5 million to supply its automation systems for installation on a number of commercial ships, two French naval ships and a U.K. Royal Navy research/support vessel. For the French navy, CAE Valmarine will build integrated safety management systems (ISMS) for French shipyard Direction des Constructions Navales (DCN), which will install the equipment on the two Mistral-class landing helicopter docks (LHD), being built to commercial standards. The first vessel (Mistral) is to be fitted in March 2005. Installation on the Tonnerre is to be completed in December 2005. CAE has already supplied the integrated automation system and emergency shutdown system for the two vessels.

Intelligent Software Agents for Machinery Diagnostics

Machinery plant maintenance represents a major expense for ship operators. In addition to normal maintenance expenditures, unexpected breakdowns have a significant cost impact. Recognizing the importance of preventing equipment failures, companies continue to adopt automation for machinery monitoring at a rapid pace. Continual improvements in the price/performance ratio of automation systems have also fueled their increased use in shipboard machinery plant monitoring. As a result, more ships with automated machinery plants exist today than ever before. However, just as a typical Internet search can easily create "information overload", so too can process automation create a "data overload" situation for the engineering crews responsible for equipment operation and maintenance.

CAE's Marine Division Wins Contracts Worth $12.5M

CAE's marine division has signed contracts with a number of commercial marine customers around the world for a total value of more than $12.5M. In the largest of the contracts, CAE has been selected by Croatia's Brodosplit Shipyard to supply both CAE Damatic(TM) automation systems as well as an integrated navigation system with voyage data recorders and bridge consoles for six P-MAX tankers contracted by STENA. Control System from EDI

Electronic Design, Inc. (EDI), designs and manufactures shipboard control and monitoring systems, training and simulation systems, and related products for large and small ships; both commercial and military. In 1997, EDI was chosen to participate in the U.S. Navy's Smart Ship project, and was awarded a contract to completely retrofit the hardwired Machinery Plant Control and Monitoring System (MPCMS) aboard an amphibious troop carrier (LSD 47), with a state-of-the-art, processor-based, software system using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology. Smart Ship was conceived in 1996 by the Navy to evaluate its future with respect to manpower and cost. It was clear COTS technology and reduced manning were essential elements.

CAE To Supply Control Systems, Upgrade Study for Patrol Frigates

CAE has been selected to provide display replacements and perform a supportability study for the CAE-developed Integrated Machinery Control System (IMCS) aboard the Canadian Navy's Halifax class Canadian Patrol Frigates. The value of the contract is approximately C$4 million. In addition to replacing IMCS console displays with state-of-the-art, high-resolution flat panels, CAE will be conducting a supportability study to analyze future IMCS support and upgrade requirements for the 12 Halifax class frigates. Supportability studies are integral to the Navy's equipment life- cycle management, determining when, where and how equipment is maintained, repaired or upgraded over its useful life.
