Originally developed to guide Allied convoys safely across the Atlantic, the use of synchronized low frequency radio signals as a navigational aid revolutionized modern maritime navigation in the 1940s. Faced with operating ships and aircraft over vast areas, researchers pioneered the use of radio signals to aid navigation in regions where poor weather conditions made traditional methods—such as dead reckoning and celestial navigation—exceptionally difficult. This system was eventually named LORAN.

New BWM Regs Cometh - Are you ready?

The global market for BWT systems is predicted to grow to over $34 billion through 2020 in response to IMO and USCG-based ballast water discharge regulations (Frost and Sullivan, 2012). BWT systems are now manufactured by dozens of companies around the world, including traditional suppliers of marine equipment, suppliers of municipal water and wastewater treatment equipment, and shipbuilders. As of November 2013, 35 BWT systems have received IMO-type approval from foreign administrations, and 28 of these have been accepted into the AMS program by the USCG.

Hyde Posts Record Delivery, Commissioning and Sales

Hyde Marine, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Calgon Carbon Corporation (CCC), announced it has delivered more than 200 Hyde GUARDIAN Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) Systems and commissioned more than 100 for operation on a variety of vessels around the world, based on sales of more than 275 units. Hyde Names Cammell Laird U.K. Installation Partner

Hyde Marine, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Calgon Carbon Corporation, announced today it has established a partnership agreement with Cammell Laird, the largest shipyard in the United Kingdom, for installation of the chemical free Hyde GUARDIAN (HG) Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) System. Cammell Laird had previously been tapped by the Royal Navy–Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) for installation of Hyde GUARDIAN systems ranging from 150m3/hr to 1,000m3/hr onto five naval vessels. The most recent installation was a complex retrofit in June 2013 of a HG1000X onboard the RFA's Fast Fleet Tanker "Wave Ruler" at Cammell Laird's Birkenhead yard.

Hyde Marine, Inc. will showcase a skid-mounted Hyde Guardian  HG150 Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) suitable for small-to-medium Offshore Service Vessels (OSV) and ferries at booth R4136U in Hall 4 (second floor) in collaboration with Marcon West, during Neva, September 24-27, 2013 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The HG150 BWTS (100 m3/hr to 150 m3/hr) is ideal for medium flow ballast system applications. Vessels that have short runs, operate in multiple salinities, or require quick turnarounds have a safe, efficient solution to meet their ballast pumping needs while not interfering with vessel operations or requiring extra crew time.

The Ballast Water Treatment Solution

Early planning, engagement with competent partners will be the key to timely compliance. The May announcement that W&O Supply had been named as the exclusive distributor of Hyde Marine’s GUARDIAN Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWT) in the U.S. and Canada may seem like routine news. After all, W&O Supply is one of the world’s largest marine suppliers and has many such agreements in place, covering a wide range of equipment. This agreement, however, comes in advance of Ballast Water Treatment deadlines looming large in the porthole. It also lays out the blueprint for owners and operators to move forward on the complicated process of achieving regulatory compliance with both Coast Guard and IMO mandates. Florida-based W&O will begin selling Hyde GUARDIAN BWTS effective immediately.

W&O Named Exclusive U.S./Canada Distributor of Hyde Guardian

Hyde Marine, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Calgon Carbon Corporation, said it has named W&O Supply as its exclusive sales distributor in the U.S. and Canada for Hyde Guardian Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS). The chemical free Hyde Guardian BWTS uses efficient filtration and ultraviolet disinfection to treat ships' ballast water to prevent the spread of invasive species from port to port. In April 2013, the Hyde Guardian BWTS earned the Alternate Management System (AMS) approval from the United States CoastGuard (USCG).

Hyde Guardian BWTS Earns USCG Approval

Calgon Carbon Corporation announced that its Hyde Guardian Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS), developed and manufactured by its wholly owned subsidiary, Hyde Marine, Inc., became one of the first BWTS to earn Alternate Management System (AMS) approval from the United States Coast Guard (USCG). AMS approval is a first step to achieving full USCG Type Approval and is an interim measure that allows these BWTS to be used on vessels for five years after the vessel is required to comply with the USCG Ballast Water Discharge Standards.

Rheinmetall Wins Breakthrough Malaysian Navy Order

Germany's Rheinmetall Group to supply 12 fire control radars & 6 electro-optical systems for six new patrol boats. Together with spare parts and training, the order also includes a transfer of know-how to Malaysia, which will enable local industry to take an active part in the project. Delivery of the systems will commence in 2015 and continue through to 2020. The Malaysian Navy’s new “Second Generation Patrol Vessels Littoral Combat Ships” (SGPV LCS), play a significant role in safeguarding regional sea lanes, where piracy poses a major threat to commercial shipping. Fire control technology from Rheinmetall will form a crucial element in the OPV’s shipboard technology, controlling the vessel’s primary and secondary armament.

Ecochlor’s BWT Systems Receives ABS Approval

Ecochlor, Inc. announced that it has received Product Design Assessment (PDA) Approval from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for their full range of ballast water treatment systems (BWTS). These systems have the capacity to treat ballast water flow rates of up to 16,000 m3/hr. Prior to ABS PDA Approval, the Ecochlor BWTS received IMO G9 Final Approval in September 2010. In November 2011, Ecochlor was granted IMO Type Approval (G8) from the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). Ten consecutive test cycles on land and aboard ship over a two-year period resulted in no surviving organisms after treatment. With testing results of all zeros, it proved that the system could meet or exceed proposed US requirements of at least 10X IMO standards.

Amiad signs supply agreement with Calgon Carbon Corp. BALPURE System Authorized in California

Basic Approval, Bal Pure Ballast Water Treatment

The Bal Pure ballast water treatment system from Severn Trent De Nora received basic approval from the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) 60th session, March 22-26, 2010. As a result, Severn Trent De Nora has submitted its dossier for final approval of the system at an upcoming MEPC session. Balpure BWT System in CG Evaluation Program

The S/R American Progress, a 575-ft, 30,000-gross-ton, double-hull U.S. flag tank ship, operated by SeaRiver Maritime, Inc., has been accepted into the United States Coast Guard’s Shipboard Technology Evaluation Program (STEP) to demonstrate the use of and collect data on the effectiveness of the Severn Trent De Nora BALPURE® ballast water treatment system. In its acceptance letter, the Coast Guard stated the ship “has an accepted means of compliance with Ballast Water Management regulations found in U.S. The United States Coast Guard established the STEP program in 2004 to promote the development of alternatives to ballast water exchange as a means of preventing invasive species from entering U.S. waters through ships’ ballast water.

USCG Seeks Ballast Water Treatment Testing Participants

The U.S. Coast Guard announced the beginning of a program aimed at facilitating the installation of experimental shipboard ballast water treatment systems. Foreign and domestic vessel owners that participate in the program may be granted equivalencies to U.S. ballast water regulations for participating vessels. The Shipboard Technology Evaluation Program (STEP) is one of several Coast Guard initiatives aimed at reducing the introduction of nonindigenous species (NIS) to U.S. waters through ballast water. The impacts of NIS on our environment, food supply, economy, health and overall biodiversity of our waterways are significant and increasing. Matson Containership MV Maunawili Christened in Philadelphia

Matson Navigation Company, Inc.'s new containership MV Maunawili was christened Saturday, July 17 at Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (KPSI) by Ms. Maryanna G. NCL First with Onboard Cell Service

NCL Corporation will be the first cruise line to bring passengers on North American cruises the ability to use their cell phones even when communications towers are oceans away. The company is providing the innovative new offering through Wireless Maritime Services, a joint venture of AT&T Wireless and Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN). Leading the way in shipboard technology, NCL pioneered the industry's first Internet access on the high seas with its Internet cafe in 1999. In 2002, NCL became the first cruise line to provide remote wireless Internet (also known as Wi-Fi) to its guests. Both services are now standard throughout NCL's entire fleet. Shipboard Technology Evaluation Program

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a Notice announcing availability of the Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA) regarding the Shipboard Technology Evaluation Program (STEP). The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center:

The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center, headquartered at Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, California, is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded partnership of organizations concerned with marine science and technology education. The MATE Center coordinates and facilitates the development of educational programs in marine science and technology involving grades 9-16, with an emphasis on community colleges. In the Monterey Bay region, MATE and Monterey Peninsula College have developed a new Marine Science and Technology Associate Degree and Certificate Program that begins this Fall 1999 semester with courses geared to prepare students for careers in marine science and technology.
