German shipbuilding has made a significant turnaround. The country’s shipbuilding industry has seen increases in the number of employees, orders and deliveries compared to 2013, according to the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association (VSM). The special shipbuilding sector drove this growth, as 20 of the 34 delivered new builds could be classified as high-quality special vessels or naval units. Although VSM announces its annual balance officially in May of each year, MR was able to obtain some early insights into the results.

SMM was another full success. The European association for shipbuilding and marine equipment, SEA Europe, has appointed Mr Douwe Cunningham as the Secretary General at the occasion of their official launch party. Mr Cunningham the former Deputy Secretary succeeds with immediate effect Dr Reinhard Lüken who had announced his departure in May taking up the position as Managing Director of VSM, the German shipbuilding and ocean industries association. The German Pavilion at Nor-Shipping, to be held in Oslo, Norway from June 12 to 15, will be the setting for presentations by 13 companies. These international companies will show their latest maritime products to the leading international decision makers of the shipbuilding and ship repairing industry and to European shipowners in Hall C. With one exception (Podszuck GmbH), all the companies are exhibitors at the SMM, the world's premier shipbuilding trade fair, which is held every two years in Hamburg, and set up new records for exhibitor and visitor numbers again last year.
