Op/Ed: Shiphandlers Beware

Was the closing of the Houston Ship Channel for over three days in March 2015 due to the use of Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (ULSFO)? After reviewing the testimony, and evidentiary material presented by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) regarding the 2015 Conti Peridot’s collision with the Carla Maersk, it is the authors' opinion the report fails to address significant contributing factors. The NTSB has overlooked a serious threat to vessel operations throughout the world.

Sainty Marine Tells Stock Exchange of Only 4 of its 29 Lost Orders

Shenzhen-listed shipbuilder Sainty Marine withheld news of 29 lost orders from said exchange, Caixin reported, citing data from industry research firms and information from a shipbuilding executive. The firm told the stock market that buyers had canceled four orders in May, but the remainder - worth RMB6 billion (US$966.3 million) - remained undisclosed. Data from industry research firms and information provided by a shipbuilding executive reveal that Sainty Marine Corp. Ltd., based in the eastern province of Jiangsu, lost 33 orders for ships that it had received from 2013 to March this year. Regulators had warned the company in April that it could be delisted at the end of the year if it did not address its financial problems.

RTM STAR Center First US institution Certified to SIGTTO LNG Standards

American Bureau of Shipping Consulting (ABS Consulting) has certified RTM STAR Center’s Tankship Liquefied Gases course as meeting all the requirements of the Society of International Gas Tanker & Terminal Operators, Ltd. (SIGTTO), LNG Shipping Suggested Competency Standards. This makes RTM STAR Center the first and only training organization in the U.S.A., and one of only eight organizations in the world, to be accredited or certified as meeting the SIGTTO standards. The certification process by ABS Consulting included a gap analysis and in-depth review of all student and instructor training materials followed by a rigorous 2-day onsite audit by a team of ABS auditors and LNG experts.
