ABB's Whale's Tail-inspired Propulsion Concept Aims to Cut Marine Industry's Fuel Consumption, Emissions

ABB on Wednesday introduced what it said was a concept representing "revolutionary propulsion system breaking new ground for efficiency in the marine industry, inspired by the dynamic motions of a whale’s tail." The innovative concept is called ABB Dynafin.The new propulsion concept features a main electric motor that powers a large wheel rotating at a moderate 30-80 rounds per minute. Vertical blades, each controlled by an individual motor and control system, extend from the wheel.

Corvus ESS Chosen for Danish Ferry Newbuild

Danish shipyard Hvide Sande Shipyard, Steel & Service has selected Canadian-based Corvus Energy to supply the energy storage system (ESS) for a new fully electric ferry for Molslinjen, the largest domestic ferry company in Denmark.The new ferry, designed by JJohannesson Maritime Engineering and OSK-ShipTech, will be the second all-electric ferry in Denmark. Its 12-minute trip between Fanø and Esbjerg is very popular; last year the ferries in operation carried 1.8 million passengers in total.

New Zealand's KiwiRail to Order RoPax Pair

New Zealand's state-owned KiwiRail has issued a request for proposal to find a preferred shipyard to build two new RoPax ferries for operator Interislander.The international tender follows a NZ$400 Million (US$256.1 million) contribution to the 2020 Budget that enables KiwiRail to procure two new modernized vessels for service between capitol Wellington on the North Island and Picton on the South Island. UAE Joins ICS

UAE maritime industry, yesterday (Tuesday 24th September) saw the UAE Shipping Association (UAESA) becoming a full member of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS).The signing, which took place on Day 2 of Seatrade Shiptech at the Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, UAE, will provide a framework for closer collaboration between the two associations. OSK Designs RoPax Ferry for Onorato

The provider of passenger and freight maritime transportation Onorato Armatori has signed a contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) for the order of two plus two RoPax ferries, designed by Danish naval architects, OSK-ShipTech.The contract was just signed at a ceremony in Beijing. Onorato Armatori is behind the RoPax ferries to be built at Chinese shipyard Guangzhou Shipyard International. AKA, MAN Collaborate for LNG-Powered Ferry

Aspin Kemp and Associates Inc. (AKA) and MAN Energy Solutions (MAN) are working together on the delivery of the propulsion package for 1+1 230-meter-long RoPax vessel for TT-Line, a German ferry operator. The vessel is to be built at Jiangsu Jingling shipyard in China. The MAN/AKA power and propulsion package includes eight MAN 51/60DF dual fuel engines, propellers and gearboxes, a fuel-gas supply system and HyProp ECO – a hybrid propulsion system. The newbuild TT-Line ferry will have the capacity for 800 passengers and over 200 articulated trucks.

Interferry Names New Chairman and Board Members

Interferry, the trade association representing the worldwide ferry industry, has announced that the new chairman of its board of directors is John Steen-Mikkelsen, CEO of Danish ferry operator Danske Faerger.Steen-Mikkelsen was elected together with three new board members at the annual general meeting held last week in Cancun, Mexico, during the association’s 43rd annual conference.The Interferry board is drawn from all types of large and small ferry operations - including ro-pax, ro-ro, cruise ferries, fast ferries and passenger-only ferries - as well as industry suppliers.

The Ferry Company Læsø wants to examine the need for a new ferry between Læsø and Frederikshavn and puts the project in the hands of OSK-ShipTech A/S. IMO in China to Share Policies

Addressing over 300 industry experts at the Green Shiptech China Congress 2017 (20-21 April), International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s Heike Deggim briefed the audience on the latest IMO regulations. She drew attention to the global 0.50% sulphur limit from 2020 as a key item on IMO’s environmental agenda. She also outlined other key regulatory moves at IMO which will be the focus in the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), including the forthcoming entry into force of the Ballast Water Management Convention in September 2017. Other focus areas are the mandatory fuel oil consumption data collection process under MARPOL Annex VI; and the Roadmap for development of a ‘Comprehensive IMO strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships’.

OSK-ShipTech Appoints New CEO

Jacob H. Thygesen has been named the new CEO of Danish naval architecture firm OSK-ShipTech A/S, effective November 1, 2016. Thygesen comes to the role with a background as Sales Director of Wärtsilä Ship Design, and prior to that he was Managing Director of Wärtsilä Denmark. As CEO of OSK-ShipTech A/S, he will be responsible for continuing the direction the company has taken since Anders Ørgård became majority shareholder 13 years ago. Ørgård will continue to play a vital role in OSK, focusing primarily on the company's commercial activities.

Greenland Builds New Research Vessel

Greenland has an intense interest in maritime research and survey for the near coastal waters, thanks in part to a growing seafood sector, an extensive coastline and some 250 different species of fish. To meet the nation’s emerging need, Greenland had a fine 32.3-meter research vessel built at the Karstensen’s Shipyard in Skagen, Denmark. The vessel was named  R/V Sanna by Helle Siegstad, Head of the Department of Fish and Shellfish, in a ceremony at Nuuk, Greenland in April of 2012.

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), a global shipping company based in the Middle East, has implemented Shiptech, an end-to-end fuel management system developed by global cloud software company Inatech. OSK-ShipTech A/S has acquired consulting naval architects A/S Jørgen Petersen who has more than 40 years of experience in ship design and consulting in the marine industry. The acquisition took effect April 1, 2015. Citing strong business development within passenger vessels in recent years, OSK-ShipTech A/S welcomes the expertise and experience of A/S Jørgen Petersen, specialists in smaller passenger ferries. Going forward, the pooling of know-how of the two companies will reinforce OSKShipTech’s position covering the entire span of passenger vessels, the company said. A review of the ferry industry’s latest challenges and opportunities attracted a record 340 delegates to Vancouver last week for the 39th annual Interferry conference. The global trade association event exposed a string of concerns – notably over punitive safety and environmental regulations – but also highlighted the financial potential of new routes, onboard shopping incentives and the use of LNG fuel. Wärtsilä to Power LNG-fuelled RoPax Ferry

A new passenger ferry being built for Swedish operator Rederi AB Gotland will be fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and will feature a Wärtsilä integrated solution.
