Rotterdam to Become Offshore Wind Port

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has made a strong commitment to the energy transition and aims to establish Rotterdam as Europe’s leading port in offshore wind and the offshore sector in general.The Port has reached an agreement with Sif Holding, where the latter already works on the assembly of foundations for offshore wind turbines.Sif Group’s decision to establish and further expand its location in the port contributes to the ambition. Port of Rotterdam Attracts Offshore Wind

Up to now, the port of Rotterdam, the largest seaport in Europe, has played a negligible role in the construction of offshore wind farms in Europe. But that is about to change. On Maasvlakte 2, Sif Group and Verbrugge International are building a dedicated offshore terminal and a production site for monopiles under the name Offshore Terminal Rotterdam. A unique combination that will play an important role in the construction of offshore wind farms in the North Sea and elsewhere. “With a further increase in scale, not only in wind turbines and parts, but also in the necessary equipment, such as larger ships, greater draught and heavier cargoes, ports must be able to keep up with this growth,” says Joost Eenhuizen, business manager Offshore at the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

Break Bulk in Rotterdam on the Way Up

The opening of a new break bulk terminal is one of the many developments and investments in the break bulk sector in the port of Rotterdam; a sector that has been very much on the up in recent years. The new Liebherr crane helped Pacorini establish itself, on 1 August, on a 12.5 hectare site with a 600-metre long quay in the Merwehaven. Here, the company will focus on the handling and storage of non-ferrous metals and possibly also soft commodities. Other recent developments are the construction of a 42-hectare terminal for a joint venture between SIF Group and Verbrugge International on Maasvlakte 2, which is expected to become operational in mid-2016. This terminal will focus on the production, handling and storage of foundations for offshore wind farms and the oil and gas industry.

Monopiles Terminal to Be Built in Rotterdam

Sif Group, Verbrugge International and the Port of Rotterdam Authority have signed an agreement in principle for the construction of a production and storage/handling terminal in Rotterdam. Sif Group and Verbrugge are planning to set up a joint venture to bring the storage and logistics of the foundations, so-called monopiles, under one roof. At the terminal, which covers around 42 hectares, Sif Group will produce steel foundations for offshore wind farms and the oil and gas industry. It is the market leader in the production of monopiles for the offshore wind market in the North Sea.

Westermeerwind Wind Farm Construction Begins

Mammoet announced today that Westermeerwind BV has reached financial close on July 25 for the turnkey construction of the Westermeerwind wind farm in Ijsselmeer, meaning work can now start on building the 48 wind turbines. The Westermeerwind wind farm consists of 48 wind turbines with a capacity of 3 MW to be installed in the water between 500-1,100 meters from the dikes of the Noordoostpolder. The client for the wind farm is Westermeerwind BV, which was founded to develop Westermeerwind at one of the windiest, and accordingly the most energy-efficient, locations in the Netherlands. Installation work is scheduled to start in March 2015. The first turbines are expected to start delivering power to the existing grid at the end of 2015.
