Around 10 of CMA CGM’s vessels are set to receive modifications and upgrades as part of the agreement the French shipping giant made with Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards, aimed at increasing the efficiency of the ships.The upgrades and modifications will deliver fuel efficiencies of more than 10%, according to Damen.The upgrades will take place at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque (DSDu) and Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam (DSAm), which between them have some of Europe’s largest dry docks…

Dry bulk shipping company Pacific Basin has decided to apply a sustainable graphene-based propeller coating XGIT-PROP, developed by Canadian company GIT Coatings, across its entire fleet.Following successful application and observing positive results on one of its Supramax dry bulk vessels, Pacific Basin has started the rollout of XGIT-PROP across 40 vessels scheduled for dry dock maintenance in 2024. The April 12 Panama Canal sailing of Norwegian Star has been canceled due to a technical issue with the ship's ABB-manufactured azipod propulsion system, according to a statement from Norwegian Cruise Line. The Norwegian Star was originally scheduled for a 15 night cruise to the Panama Canal out of Los Angeles to Miami with port stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Huatulco, Puerto Chiapas, Puntarenas, Panama Canal, Cartagena, and Ocho Rios. The ship will remain out of service until April 26, 2015 so repairs can be made to the Azipod systems. Norwegian said a technical issue was to blame for the propulsion problem. The Norwegian Star is a 91,000 gross ton, 2,350 passenger cruise ship that entered service in 2001.

Gibdock completed a complex propulsion system job, following the recent docking of the 57-ton bollard pull capacity Boluda group harbour tug Siroco. The 2001-built Siroco, which operates in the port of Algeciras, arrived in Gibraltar in early June for a one month docking that included the complete removal and overhaul of the two Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) units onboard. As soon as the vessel was drydocked, it was jet washed with high pressure water and hand-scraped to remove marine growth in preparation for the VSP overhaul. The next task was to crop four access plates and two upright supports from the protective structure to allow access for Gibdock engineers so they could remove the VSP blades.

Like her three predecessors, Evelyn Maersk will be part of the series of the world’s largest container vessels, and she will like her sister vessels set new standards for safety and environment. On August 12, Odense Steel Shipyard presented its latest newbuilding, an 11,000 TEU container vessel, for the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, accompanied by her husband, Mr Peder Uggla, honoured A.P. Moller - Maersk and the Yard by naming the newbuilding Emma Maersk. The namegiving ceremony was attended by the company’s and the yard’s Boards of Directors as well as Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller. The newbuilding is named after Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller’s late wife, Emma, who passed away in December last year. Just as Emma Mc-Kinney Møller was a person others held in high regard, the vessel Emma Maersk will set its mark. As the world's largest container vessel it will set new standards for safety and environment.
